Our Man
Suggs Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Pushing his pen across the page
To nowhere in particular
He's dreaming of his holidays
His stomach's perpendicular

He tried to keep his keep fit interest
But the summer's nearly here
The only exercise he really gets is when he's lifting beer

Our man is feeling rather wonderful
Lying somewhere comfortable
His feet up in the air...oh
Our man is sipping drinks incredible
Eating all that's edible
He hasn't got a care

His day's spent pushing money round
But he's not got a lot of his own
His wife lives on the other side of town
And all his kids are fully grown
Would the enormous corporation
Lose much more than it's pride?
If he was to take an early pension
With a little on the side

Our man is feeling rather wonderful
Lying somewhere comfortable
A-bathing on his yacht...oh
Our man is drinking drinks exotica
Dreaming of Uttoxeter
I think not

He's fanning himself with fivers
And drinking blue lagoons
He's watching erotic scuba divers
While the band plays calypso tunes

Our man is feeling rather wonderful
Lying somewhere comfortable
His feet up in the air...oh
And he smiles because there's no

Extradition there...oh
Our man is feeling rather wonderful

Overall Meaning

The opening lines of the song "Our Man in 2-3" by Suggs talks about a man who is aimlessly pushing his pen across the paper while actually daydreaming about his upcoming holidays. He seems to be preoccupied with thoughts of relaxation and escape from the daily grind. The lyrics suggest that he has lost interest in exercise, and his waistline shows this. His only physical activity seems to be lifting a cold beer while, at the same time, indulging in all manner of edible treats. He seems to have no cares in the world as he indulges in what he can afford at the moment. He has no money of his own, and all his kids are grown, so he feels he is living in the present without having to worry about the future. The musician has painted a picture of a man who has been so busy working towards a retirement that he is now living out his days of comfort and ease.

The song has a catchy and upbeat sound to it as Suggs tells the tale of our man in 2-3. The lyrics are witty and whimsical, and they paint a picture of a man who is taking life easy. The song is full of ironic humour about a man who is content with his lot in life while the world thinks he is living the good life. The song seems to portray a man who is an escapist and is content to lead a life of self-indulgence as long as he can afford it.
