War Inside My Head
Suicidal Tendencies Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

War inside my head
War inside my head
War inside my head
War inside my head

War inside my head ain't a pretty sight
But I don't want no sympathy
It's happened a thousand times before
It's just a harsh reality

[Chorus]
War inside my head can you sense it
War inside my head can you see it
War inside my head can you feel it
War inside my head

Can you hear the pain
Can you see the pain
Can you sense the pain
Can you feel the pain
Can you help the pain
Can you fix the pain
Can you taste the pain
Can you hear the war inside my head

The only thing real is the way I feel
And that's the pain that's deep inside
That battle from within is gonna begin
And there ain't nowhere to hide

[Chorus]

War inside my head every night and day
I never get no piece of mind
It ought to be a sin, I just can't win
And pure hell is all I find

[Chorus]

Overall Meaning

Suicidal Tendencies' song War Inside My Head is a powerful depiction of the turmoil that one can experience within their own mind. The repeated phrase, "War inside my head," captures the intensity and relentlessness of this inner conflict. The singer acknowledges the unpleasantness of this reality, but does not seek pity or sympathy from others. This pain has been experienced before and is just a fact of life.

The chorus of the song poses a series of questions to the listener, asking if they can hear, see, sense, feel, help, fix, or even taste the pain of this war. The repetition of these questions emphasizes the urgency and desperation of the situation. The singer asserts that the only thing that is real is the pain he feels, and that there is no escaping this internal battle.

The final verse highlights the constant nature of this war, which pervades both day and night. The singer expresses the futility of trying to find peace or escape from this conflict, as it seems like an impossible task. The idea of being trapped in "pure hell" is a bleak and terrifying thought.

Overall, War Inside My Head is a raw and honest portrayal of the struggles of mental health. The lyrics are a poignant reminder that we must acknowledge and confront the battles within ourselves in order to find any hope of peace.

I met Mike and the band in '91, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. They were really cool and down to earth to talk with, plus they fed us Little Caesar's pizza - LOL!! They all signed my hat and Mike wrote the "Suicidal" logo on the underside of the bill.
They were opening for Queensryche (Empire Tour), but I mostly went because of ST (they should've been headliners back then)!! Anyhow, it was, and still is, the best concert I've been to!! Both bands sounded awesome!!
BTW, love your content/videos, TAOFLEDERMAUS (Jeff)!!!
