The Drive
Summer At Shatter Creek Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I took a drive to see you last night after midnight.
I drove all the way over you weren't there.
On my return I decided to travel on to the part of town that
I'm not so sure of, what they call bad.
I saw girls pushing babies
as they slept in their strollers
being pushed from the corners into the dark.
And there were dogs that took over where the homeless
would slumber n the day,
but it was night now in the park.
Now this part it's so different.
It's unlike me it's so distant
just the colors are different,
now I know.
I'm not sure why I'm wary,

in the dark things get hazy,
but I know I'd be crazy to ignore.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Summer At Shatter Creek's song The Drive describe a late night journey that leads to a realization about a part of town the singer is unfamiliar with. The singer describes driving to see someone, but upon arrival, realizes that the person they came to see is not there. On the drive back, they decide to explore the darker part of town that they have heard about. As they drive, they witness impoverished girls pushing babies in strollers and homeless dogs taking over abandoned spaces. The lyrics highlight the contrast between the singer's own life and the realities faced by those in the darker part of town.

The lyrics suggest that the singer is unsettled by what they see, but also aware of their own privilege and responsibility to acknowledge and address the disparities in their city. The line "I'm not sure why I'm wary, in the dark things get hazy, but I know I'd be crazy to ignore" conveys a sense of unease and uncertainty, but also a determination to confront and engage with the realities of their surroundings.

Overall, the lyrics to The Drive illustrate the importance of acknowledging and confronting social and economic inequality, and encourage listeners to consider their own role in creating a more equitable society.
