She started her singing career at a very early age of four. She participated in many competitions and made her presence felt. Her family soon shifted to Mumbai when Tabassum, a TV host spotted her talent and expressed to her parents that she could further her career if they went to Mumbai. She became quite famous through the various competitions she participated in. Her performances were telecast all over India through the National Television channel Doordarshan, through the music show Meri Aawaz Suno where she won the "Lata Mangeshkar Trophy" for the best female singer of India along with Pradip Somasundaran in the male category. This was the first such televised contest in India in 1996. Her first break in a Hindi film was in the film Shastra followed by Gang, Veergati, Dahek, Bade Dilwala, Raja Ki Aayegi Baraat, Shyam Benegal's Samar and the Vidhu Vinod Chopra film Mission Kashmir. She had no formal training before she entered into various national singing competitions. Lata Mangeshkar offered to train her when she won on the nationally-telecast "Meri Aawaz Suno"
Her singing career got a big boost when Sandeep Chowta gave her the first major break in Mast. After Mast there was no turning back. Sunidhi Chauhan had been getting lots of criticism for an extremely mature voice despite being young. However this criticism ended once Chameli came with her biggest song to date "Bhaage Re Mann" and today she and Nihira Joshi are known as the most versatile singers since Kavita Krishnamurthy and Asha Bhosle.

The song Kyon Main Na Janu by Sunidhi Chauhan is a beautiful rendition that explores themes of love and confusion. The lyrics are poetic and the melody is captivating, making for a delightful listening experience. The song starts off with the line "Kaga, sab tan khaiyo re, chun-chun khaiyo maas," which translates to "Oh crow, eat all of my body, eat every piece of me." This line symbolizes the singer's willingness to sacrifice everything in the name of love. The lines "Do naina mat khaiyo, mohe piya milan ki aas" imply that she is hopeful for the reunion with her beloved.
The chorus of the song comprises the lines "Kyun main na janu? Kyun main na janu?" which translates to "Why don't I know? Why don't I know?" This is a clear indication of the singer's confusion over her feelings for her loved one. The following lines "Bas tere hi tarane, jiya lagta hai gane, tujh se hi milne ko karta hai kyun bahaney?" suggest that listening to her loved one's voice is the only thing that makes the singer truly happy, and she makes excuses to meet him.
The overall message of the song is that love can cause confusion and uncertainty but can also be an incredibly powerful force that brings people together. The singer is unsure about her feelings but is overtaken by love and is willing to do anything for her beloved. This song offers a beautiful portrayal of the complexities of love, making it a timeless classic.
