The Shepherd's Dog
House By The Sea
There is a house by the sea
Two jealous sisters, they're waiting for me
And one is laid on the floor
And one is changing the locks on the doors
And I've been buying the time on my knees
Around the house by the sea
The scent of roses and raspberry leaves
And there is smoke in my clothes
Too much time with just smoke in my nose
And I've been making the meaning they lack
And I've been burning that book they come back too
There is a house by the sea
And an ocean between it and me
And like the shape of a wave
The jealous sisters will sing on my grave
And I've been living to run where they led
And I've been dying to rise from their bed
And I've been sparing my neck from their chain
And they've been changing the sound of my name
And I've been swimming to them in my sleep
And I've been dreaming our love and our freedom
The lyrics of "House By The Sea" by Iron and Wine explore the complexities of relationships and the tension that can arise between siblings. The song tells the story of a man who is caught between two sisters, both of whom are vying for his attention. One sister is lying on the floor while the other is changing the locks on the doors of their house by the sea. The singer has been buying time by hoping and praying for a resolution to their conflict but is losing patience with their bickering.
The house by the sea is painted as a beautiful yet stifling place, full of the scent of roses and raspberry leaves, and the choking smell of smoke that clings to the clothes of the inhabitants. The singer has been attempting to create meaning in a place that lacks it, and his efforts have resulted in nothing but problems. The sisters' jealousy has led them to try and assert control over him, changing the sound of his name and chaining him to a life that he doesn't want.
The lyrics of "House by the Sea" are ultimately about the struggle to find freedom and love in a world that is full of conflict, jealousy, and manipulation. The singer is torn between his desire for both sisters, longing for a time when they can be free and happy together.
