Jane
Sweet Featuring Brian Connolly Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴

Death is part of life
A destination, a mutilation
Walk into the light, (that's what they say)
Just concentrate, just have faith
I watched you die
I could not cry
Live was getting colder
And I just grew older
It feels like
Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane
Life is part of dying
Like a sick joke, (come on let's have a smoke)
A great walk through darkness
No heaven or hell, who can tell
I watched you die
I could not cry
Live was getting colder
And I just grew older
It feels like
Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane
Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane
Ohohoho, I watched you die
I could not cry
Live was getting colder
And I just grew older
It feels like
Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane
Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane

Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane
Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like, Jane

Overall Meaning

In the song "Jane" by Sweet featuring Brian Connolly, the lyrics explore the theme of death and the inevitable cycle of life and dying. The opening lines "Death is part of life, a destination, a mutilation" set the tone for a contemplation on mortality and the unknown transition into the afterlife. The singer reflects on the experience of witnessing someone's passing, expressing a sense of helplessness in the face of death and the inability to fully process the emotion, as portrayed in the lines, "I watched you die, I could not cry."

As the song progresses, there is a juxtaposition between the seriousness of death and the idea of life being intertwined with dying, described metaphorically as a "sick joke." The reference to "come on let's have a smoke" hints at a nonchalant attitude towards the gravity of mortality, perhaps as a coping mechanism to numb the pain or fear associated with the inevitability of death. The uncertainty of what lies beyond death is also contemplated, with the mention of walking through darkness and the ambiguity of whether there is heaven or hell, leaving the question open-ended.

The repetition of the name "Jane Doe" throughout the song serves as a symbol representing anonymity and the universality of death. By associating the concept of death with a generic name, the lyrics convey a sense of detachment and resignation towards the finality of life. The singer continues to reflect on the passage of time and the gradual realization of growing older, paralleling the emotional numbness that comes with witnessing the loss of a loved one, as highlighted in the lines, "Live was getting colder, And I just grew older."

The haunting refrain of "Jane Doe like, Jane Doe like" repeated throughout the song emphasizes the cyclical nature of life and death, reinforcing the idea that mortality is an intrinsic part of the human experience. The repetition of these phrases, along with the somber and introspective tone of the lyrics, creates a sense of melancholy and contemplation on the transient nature of existence. Overall, the song "Jane" delves into the profound themes of mortality, grief, and the mysterious journey into the unknown beyond death, inviting listeners to reflect on the fragility and beauty of life.

My friend and I spent an evening with Brian in The Angel in Staines, he asked us if we wanted to go to a nightclub with him afterwards. He’d bought us drinks already and agreed to meet us there again a week later, we declined. That was the evening he was attacked, I wish we’d gone with him, maybe the outcome could have been better. Believe me, he was a nice man and very down to earth, that was a night I’ll never forget. RIP Brian.
