Living Is Simple
Switchfoot Lyrics

Living in simple
Living is simple

Living is simple
It's gravity; gravity isn't so hard
Living is simple
It's entropy; entropy, falling apart
I'm falling apart again

Living is simple
And breathing is easy, it's easy to do
Living is simple
And losing is easy; I'm losing my cool
I'm losing my cool again

All will be made well
Will be made well
Will be made well
Will be well

Is this fiction?
Is this fiction?
Hope has given himself to the worst

Is this fiction or divine comedy?
Where the last of the last finish first

Living is simple
Living is simple
Living is simple

Living is dying
Your mercy, Your mercy is how I believe
Living is dying
I can't understand it
I'm down on my knees confessing my needs again

I've had my choices
I've chosen today
I've had my choices
Choices remain

Is this fiction? Is this fiction?
Hope has given himself to the worst
Is this fiction or divine comedy?
Where the last of the last finish first

Living is simple

Overall Meaning

The song "Living Is Simple" by Switchfoot seems to reflect on the themes of life, hope, and the struggle to keep things together. The repetition of the phrase "Living is simple" sets up a paradox, as the lyrics go on to describe how living can be difficult and falling apart can be easy. The opening lines suggest that living is governed by two basic forces: gravity and entropy. Gravity is the force that holds everything together, while entropy is the force that causes things to fall apart over time. The singer seems to be struggling with maintaining the balance between these two forces in their own life, as they admit to falling apart again and losing their cool.

Despite the struggle, there is a glimmer of hope. The repetition of the phrase "All will be made well" suggests a belief in redemption and a restoration of harmony. This is contrasted with the question "Is this fiction?" which speaks to the idea that the hope for redemption may seem too good to be true. However, the singer asserts their belief that hope is necessary in order to carry on. The idea of divine comedy is introduced, which asserts that even in the darkest of situations, there can be a sense of humor or irony. The final lines bring the song full circle, repeating the phrase "Living is simple" and then adding the line "Living is dying," which seems to acknowledge the transient nature of existence.

Daniele

for me this song is a litttle paradox.

It seems like an IDea. That Living is Simple because of faith.
When you choose to life in the day.

and when the "living is simple" is repeated over and over again....
It seems like get mixed with Tv News...
and that the singer at the end leaves the room.
It seems like a commentary that living is not that simple.
And always insisting by repeating "living is simple" while not make it simple. It just leaves you dissapointed...

So nostalgic. Switchfoot is my all time favorite band, even if I don't listen to them a whole lot anymore, they'll always have the biggest place in my heart.

For me too! Hey 😊

veritas3in1

Everyone has those 5 "changed my life" albums that are written in their Book of Life, and Learning to Breathe is one of mine! Helped shape my theology and spirituality during the time I "came of age" in high school and will refer back to this album into my 80s. To me, the songwriting lyrically and musically/sonically is soooo rich.

To the ends of the earth Switchfoot!!

Switchfoot's older stuff isn't as popular, and the video was uploaded in 2015.
