Colours
Sykes Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

The colours rise and rain above the shadow town awe struck with love.
You'll never see a war time dove. How could we say, how could we know we'd make these feelings grow.

The slow burning euphoria, the bright phantasmagoria, the morning black Victoria; all of them fools, why they see, she's ancient history.

And I could fly with the breeze in my hair, no I just couldn't care. High and dry; someone send up a flare 'cos we're losing our air. I used to think it was naive to think you could do anything if you believe.

Oh, it's so much easier than you know.
Oh, ignite the fuse; ten seconds to go.
Oh, send a distress call; she's gonna blow.
Same world: different colours.

And as the dawn on new friends falls, the others round them raise their walls, but still you'll hear them cry their calls: Freedom for all, A middle way, Let all men have their say.

The time has come to forget what has been and just wipe the slate clean: it's begun. You will know what I mean and you know it's obscene: though the maps may show you all the lines, they won't ever display to you their crimes.

Oh, it's so much easier than you know.
Oh, ignite the fuse; ten seconds to go.

Oh, send a distress call; she's gonna blow.
Same world: different colours

Overall Meaning

The song "Colours" by Sykes is a commentary on the world we live in where people divide themselves based on race, religion, and political affiliations. It speaks to the fact that despite our differences in color, creed, and orientation, we all live in the same world, breathe the same air and share the same destiny.

The opening lines of the song "The colours rise and rain above the shadow town awe-struck with love. You'll never see a wartime dove" speaks of a world where colors rise above the differences that divide and create a feeling of love and peace instead of war. It suggests that if only we took the time to see things beyond the darkness of shadowy differences, we could learn to love each other and live in harmony. The lines "How could we say, how could we know we'd make these feelings grow" suggest that we might be surprised at what could happen if we put aside our differences and make a conscious effort to connect with people from different backgrounds.

The line "she's ancient history" speaks to the fact that the simplistic way of seeing difference is no longer tenable in today's world. The colorful language in the remainder of the verse speaks to the futility of people who still cling to simplistic ways of seeing difference as being fools. It urges people to see beyond the superficial to get to the truth of who we all are at our core.

The song has a universal message- that we should learn to embrace our differences and see the beauty in diversity. We should love each other despite our differences and not be afraid to speak our minds.

You'll never see a war time dove. How could we say, how could we know we'd make these feelings grow.
It's impossible to see a dove during war. How can we predict that we will develop these strong emotions?

The slow burning euphoria, the bright phantasmagoria, the morning black Victoria; all of them fools, why they see, she's ancient history.
The steady but intense feeling of happiness, the colorful and imaginative scenery, and the dark morning are all foolish creations. They are all blinded to the fact that the past no longer matters.

I could easily ride the wind with my hair flowing without a worry. But the reality is, we're in trouble, and we need help. I once believed that having faith alone can accomplish anything, but now, I know it's not enough.

Oh, it's so much easier than you know.
It's much simpler to do than you think.

And as the dawn on new friends falls, the others round them raise their walls, but still you'll hear them cry their calls: Freedom for all, A middle way, Let all men have their say.
As new friendships form, others put up barriers. But you'll still hear them demanding universal freedom, a compromise, and the right to be heard.

The time has come to forget what has been and just wipe the slate clean: it's begun. You will know what I mean and you know it's obscene: though the maps may show you all the lines, they won't ever display to you their crimes.
We need to let go of the past and start anew. It's started. You understand what I'm saying, and you know it's messed up. Although the maps may depict everything, they don't show the atrocities committed.

A McDonald's that I recently visited in Tallinn, Estonia, had gone through a redesign, and many of the interiour colour accents were dark. A redesigned Circle-K also had a mix of dark/earthy and metallic on equipment and wooden / light wooden at the cashier table (maybe simply because it was one of the oldest pieces of furniture at that place). The eating table was dark, with pots of live flowers/greenery in the middle.

A "Lido" — a Latvian restaurant chain, also in Tallinn — had lighter accents, though again with a metallic colour for equipment, and wooden accents for customer furniture.

Most big grocery / one-stop stores in Estonia have plenty of loud colours, usually alternating between red, dark blue/navy blue, and light beige. Prisma stores (similar in quality to Publix) are loud green.

All mall interiors in Estonia have varieties of white-to-beige.

For gadgets, the first half of the 1990s had a mix of off-white, beige, shiny silver (for fancy stuff), and gray (think early PowerBooks).

All-black designs were popular in the mid-1990s, sometimes with a small red accent. Probably inspired by ThinkPads and red indicator LEDs or red buttons.

Translucent was in vogue, along with flashy colours inspired by iMacs (1998 and on a little).

Gray, dark gray, off-black in the first half 2000s.

Silver and black combinations for gadgets in the second half of 2000s.

It's not as if there's less colour, but many things with colour tend to be less loud, and more like pastel, as if the paint were made to blend in with the rest of the gadget. So it's probably a mix of pastel colours and tropical fruit and tropical nature colours on gadgets.

Whereas many people wear either subdued patterns or neon for workwear.

Young men in Estonia are either of the two:

One group really likes black, even in the Summer: wearing black T-shirts, black shorts, with matching shoes.

The other group wears white tank tops to show off their physiques.

White and light-coloured clothes are necessary, because they allow people to notice ticks.

Interesting subject and info! I’ve never really the option of picking the color I really wanted. I’ve always been quite limited by what was available at the time.

I bought my first car in ‘05, an ‘02 Honda Civic LX. It was beige inside and out. Color wasn’t even a consideration for this first car. I just needed a small, inexpensive car and that was what was available.

It ended up being a very good color choice because I live in South Florida and the heat can be brutal. For other personal reasons, I strongly dislike a dark interior, like black or gray. Unfortunately, these days, you can’t find any car without at least some black! And most are ENTIRELY black. 😡

After driving that ‘02 Civic for 18 years, I bought a brand new 2023 Honda Civic Touring this year in January. Due to inventory shortages, my choices were VERY limited. (Civics no longer come in beige.)

My first choice was white, but there were no white Civics at the time, so I bought the meteorite metallic gray Civic. I really didn’t want a gray-colored car, BUT I was determined to get the light-colored gray seats (they look ivory to me though) instead of black seats. Only the white and gray Honda Civics currently have gray seats. All other colors have a solid black interior. In South Florida?? NO!

The interiors still have a LOT of black. Far more than I’d like. But I have to admit: the two-tone black and gray interior looks pretty classy! My Civic’s exterior metallic gray has a subtle, beautiful sparkle. In certain lighting, the gray appears to have a very subtle blue undertone. The bluish gray is gorgeous! (Objectively though, I don’t think there’s actually any blue undertone. I think it’s just a trick of the light.)

If I had my choice of color combo, I’d choose a deep, sparkly wine red exterior with an ivory/tan interior. I’m actually not a fan of red cars and really dislike the plain, flat red of most cars. Red has absolutely no appeal for me…. UNLESS it’s a sparkly wine red! I think some Mazdas are a sparkly wine red? Those are just gorgeous!

However, I pick interior color first, then exterior color. I need that cream/ivory/tan interior, then I pick the exterior from there. My mantra is NO BLACK SEATS in South Florida! It’s just too hot for that.
