Enjoy The Silence
Sylvain Chauveau & Ensemble Nocturne Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Words like violence
Break the silence
Come crashing in
Into my little world
Painful to me
Pierce right through me
Cant you understand
Oh my little girl

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms
Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Vows are spoken
To be broken
Feelings are intense
Words are trivial
Pleasures remain
So does the pain
Words are meaningless
And forgettable

All I ever wanted
All I ever needed
Is here in my arms

Words are very unnecessary
They can only do harm

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of this song begin with a rather poetic verse which speaks of the power of words. The first line has a metaphorical meaning; words like violence can have a severe impact on someone's emotions. The silence represents comfort and understanding, but when someone breaks that silence, they can harm a person's emotional state. The second verse talks about how much the singer cares about someone who may be their love interest by referring to them as "my little girl." However, their use of words and language may not be able to express this depth of feeling. The chorus asserts that the person being referred to is all the singer "ever wanted" or "ever needed" and that just being in their arms suffices. The singer claims that words are unnecessary because they can't do the same work as emotions and physical experiences.

The second verse's first line dourly speaks of the inevitability of vows breaking; hence, making promise-making potentially meaningless. Vocal expression is then undermined as language only takes away from the intensity of feelings (which never can be said in its fullness through speech). Words are portrayed as only a hurdle in attaining the complete pleasure of understanding another person. Despite this pain that can come from words, the chorus repeats the caring sentiment from the first verse, only reiterating that their love might be beyond language altogether.
