Symphony X is often compared to other progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Shadow Gallery. Their music includes complex timings and odd meters while incorporating elements of heavy metal and progressive rock. Their early albums in particular contain strong neo-classical elements reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and others. The band have been categorized as progressive metal, power metal, and neoclassical metal, though the band themselves dislike genre labels with Romeo stating they can be "misleading sometimes ... at the core of it all we're a metal band".
Romeo explained the band's name in a 2008 interview; "So, you know, the music we were coming up with had the keyboard thing and the guitar, and some classical elements, so the word 'Symphony' came up and, so the dramatic thing, you know? So then, somebody said 'Symphony X' and we were like, 'yeah, that's cool' it is that kinda thing, and the 'X' is the unknown and all the other stuff we do."
The albums The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V: The New Mythology Suite were partially recorded in The Dungeon, Romeo's home studio. The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld were fully recorded there and produced by Romeo himself.

it's frame
Unbroken silence - a total misfortune and shame
Ragin obsession - this mask of oppression, it hides your
aggression from view
This tearing suture renounces the love he once knew
Trust the lie - you falsify the line of truth
You disguise your insolence
Don't deny insanity - mediocrity
Save us from this masquerade of lies
Kings and fools die in ridicule (save us)
Save us from this masquerade of lies
A fallen fortress sees him beneath starless skies
Subsiding deeper - the final farewell in his eyes
Unspoken hero - distrusted and thrusted within surmise
Seizing intrusion to unveil his clever disguise
Your sacrifice this paradise of innocence
Trust the lie - you falsify the line of truth
Save us from this masquerade of lies

Save us from this masquerade of lies
The lyrics of Symphony X's song "Masquerade" portray the theme of deception and betrayal. The first verse describes a forbidden portrait, shackled in darkness and confined to its frame, which represents a person who is oppressed and silenced. The mask of oppression that hides their aggression leads to the denial of their own insanity and mediocrity. The chorus "Save us from this masquerade of lies, Kings and fools die in ridicule," suggests that the mask of deceit and lies brings only disappointment and destruction in the end.
The second verse focuses on the story of a fallen hero who is distrusted and misunderstood by others. He cleverly disguises himself to survive within surmise, but the unspoken truth eventually unravels his facade. The sacrifice of his paradise of innocence and the line of truth he falsifies leads to his final farewell under starless skies. The solo section conveys the intensity of the emotions involved in the process of revealing the truth and breaking free from the masquerade.
Overall, "Masquerade" is a powerful song with thought-provoking lyrics that emphasize the importance of honesty, authenticity, and the consequences of deceit and self-deception.
