Symphony X is often compared to other progressive metal bands such as Dream Theater, Fates Warning, and Shadow Gallery. Their music includes complex timings and odd meters while incorporating elements of heavy metal and progressive rock. Their early albums in particular contain strong neo-classical elements reminiscent of Yngwie Malmsteen, Randy Rhoads, and others. The band have been categorized as progressive metal, power metal, and neoclassical metal, though the band themselves dislike genre labels with Romeo stating they can be "misleading sometimes ... at the core of it all we're a metal band".
Romeo explained the band's name in a 2008 interview; "So, you know, the music we were coming up with had the keyboard thing and the guitar, and some classical elements, so the word 'Symphony' came up and, so the dramatic thing, you know? So then, somebody said 'Symphony X' and we were like, 'yeah, that's cool' it is that kinda thing, and the 'X' is the unknown and all the other stuff we do."
The albums The Divine Wings of Tragedy and V: The New Mythology Suite were partially recorded in The Dungeon, Romeo's home studio. The Odyssey, Paradise Lost, Iconoclast and Underworld were fully recorded there and produced by Romeo himself.

The Eyes Of Medusa
Symphony X Lyrics

Tell me, now do you somehow
Still recognize this stare I wear
Through crystal tears
The light escapes my smile
There is no likeness to be seen,
It is so strange to me
Awaken vindication
The mirrors curse-it besets me
Endless, timeless, faceless terror
To the isle of deadly shores
Sightless, countless, ageless torture
To behold the sight of Medusa's eyes
Under a spell, I'm enchanted
The hand of fate is never late to ring the time
I'm forced to climb the walls
A voice bids last farewell
With no beginning or no end to be found by me
Endless, timeless, faceless terror
To the isle of deadly shores
Sightless, countless, ageless torture
To behold the sight of Medusa's eyes
Endless, timeless, faceless terror
To the isle of deadly shores
Sightless, countless, ageless torture
To behold the sight of Medusa's eyes
The Eyes of Medusa is a song by American progressive metal band, Symphony X. The lyrics reveal the singer's experience of being petrified by Medusa's gaze. The chorus repeats the phrase "Endless, timeless, faceless terror, to the isle of deadly shores, sightless, countless, ageless torture, to behold the sight of Medusa's eyes," which creates a haunting and dark atmosphere.
The first verse introduces the idea of looking into the eyes of Medusa through the eyes of the singer. The "stare" spoken of implies recognition, and "crystal tears" refer to the shedding of tears due to her gaze. The singer's smile does not reflect his emotion and there is no likeness left to recognize him. In the second verse, the singer feels trapped and enchanted. Fate's hand is forcing him to climb walls and bid last farewells. The chorus repeats the terrifying experience of looking into the eyes of Medusa that is endless, timeless, and faceless torture.
