I’d heard them before on radio, with toxicity of course. The first time I’d ever seen them was the video for BYOB on I think headbangers ball, as a kid walking out to the living room.

They terrified me and I had no idea why from the visuals.

Flash forward high school about 2007 I bought this album. It was the first I’d ever bought in my life. The only other one I’d ever owned was Don Mclean American Pie (fantastic album btw).

That was the single most influential moment in my life that didn’t involve someone dying, which like anyone there’s been plenty.

I can’t even describe the change it made me since I’ve never been the same person since.

The only ones I'd go out of my way to skip are 36 and possibly Jet Pilot. Everything else in their discography slaps. Oh and album ranking would probably go like this:
5: Steal This Album: Great album, but it has a decent amount of forgettable songs and 36. (I reviewed this one on Gal Goodnut's upload for the album.
4: Hypnotize: By all means, a masterful album, but for me it doesn't hit the same highs as the other albums. (Also same as STA I reviewed this one on Gal Goodnut's other upload.)
3: Toxicity: Surprising, I know. This album has some of the best songs of their discography, but it also has stuff that's less stellar, such a Jet Pilot, Shimmy, Bounce, and to a lesser extent Psycho and X. (Same as the last 2, reviewed this one already.)
2: System of a Down: I adore every song on this album, and the guitar tone is nasty. It's kind of tied with Mezmerize for me, but for now I feel like the next album just inches its way above.
1: Mezmerize: Possibly up there with the single best albums ever made, every song ranges from incredible to game-changing.

It's the fourth of July. Probably 2006 or 7, I'm really young, either 5 or 6 assuming my guesstimatesare accurate. I'm sitting in the cracking suncooked fake-fiber back seat of my dad's long suffering supra.
The memories are hazy on details, but I think there was a brief conversation about a new album, and then my brother pops out what I now know was the same band's first album and placed a new disc in the CD player.
For the first time in my life, my undiagnosed-but-definitely-in-some-way-fucked brain enjoyed music instead of getting angry about it being put on.
I don't remember the fireworks at all, I dont even remember anything from that day except the car ride, the feeling of sharp shards of plastic on my fingers, and Revenga, Radio/Video, and a few choice other bits of songs.

It wouldn't be until 2014 until I rediscover the band and fall in love with their entire discography, but that car ride planted the seeds.
This will forever be my favorite album ever, and SOAD my favorite band

Some of my best memories as a teenager was my friend playing this album all the way through while driving around town. She passed away before “hypnotize” came out a few months later. Amazing how songs can vividly take you back to a specific time in your life.

Te lo juro pa. Ya me gustaba SOAD por las canciones más conocidas (BYOB, Chop-Suey, Aerials, Science, etc...). Y este fue el primer álbum que escuché. Desde el intro y escuchando la tercera rola en la casa de una querida amiga, quedé volado, tipo, qué bien suena SOAD y distinto a lo que venía escuchando, me encanta el ritmo que me dan y ni hablar de escuchar a Serj Tankian cantar como un loco. Andaba fumado y para entonces mis viajes más que placenteros eran puro pánico, por lo que me dio un viaje más cercano, como si ellos me cantaran a mí e incluso sintiera su odio, de haberlo. This double album was the last blast of popular rock that I can remember. I remember when I entered high school in 2004, everyone was into American Idiot. When I graduated 4 years later, Mesmerize/Hypnotize was the most popular. Probably the last time rock was really large-spread and had a movement. Rock is still around, but it's fractured and without a movement.

True, but American Idiot did come from a very important band. That album is pretty meh but they made some good shit back in the 90s so really it was just 00s kids appreciating the little bit of greatness that was there. Hopefully most of them dug on their better stuff.

maybe if your, like, 14 and got sick of listening to other numetal like slipknot. Other then that, soad is more of a vibe thign for me, and the highly political lyrics and the unique sound kinda just does something for me.

SOAD are one great band that I am yet to see live. What with Family, 'work',fishing,camping,motorbikes,living and loving and lots more. Megaliths, old architecture,music. Bloody hell. there's more! Painting and writing etc. If they ever come back to the Albion,I'll be awaiting with ticket in hand.If I'm still alive.
