Honestly the first 3 days were crucial after the building collapsed anything after those 3 days the chances were little to none. I get that everything was against them during those days like the fire burning within and the weather but I still felt like they could’ve done better. These are people, loved ones who have families missing them. This could’ve been easily avoided but was chosen to be ignored and now here are the repercussions. Yet they still give false hope to these families.

I agree it went slower then expected. The rubble should have been cleared and all living victims should have been rescued by now. I don't know why it went the way it did. Perhaps Americans don't have the experience to handle this type of situation or perhaps they don't care or perhaps they're overwhelmed with emotion. Whatever the reason, it is a tragedy more people could not be rescued.

@Mehmet Yılmaz I'm sorry for your loss in Turkey, of course we watched the news about it. Compared to Turkey, Miami collapse was complete in part where it happened, pile is only a few meters high. Beside, part of the building is in danger of collapse. I'm afraid no one else survived which is why they rather protect rescuers than hurry and risk additional deaths if what's left collapses.

we had earthquake in 30 october 2020 in İzmir/Turkey
and we managed to rescue 70 people from under the rubbles. Rescue team ended operation in 4 days
We lost 116 people but there was 8 buildings collapsed after earthquake
I think US could make better. It is really sad people lost their lifes.

@on.plateau. It is too invasive. They are afraid of collapses inside collapsed ruins that could kill rescuers, this is also reason they don't put a lot more people at work. Beside, there is big danger remains that are still standing would collapse. At this point it is about safety of rescue workers because it is highly unlikely they will find even one person alive, too many days without water and high temperatures had passed. I believe they will soon call off search&rescue to speed the things up.

The public safety department must impose "dereliction" on building that are deem a safety hazard to its occupants and force them to evacuate. Those building would either be repaired or demolished if they can no longer afford to repair it.
Allowing residents to Sit on a time bombs is just not right.

Sadly more of these sorts of failures are likely to happen due to the inherent problem with condo complexes where the unit owners are their own condo board. Condos buildings are typically run by a board of units owners who have little to no actual expertise in facility maintenance and engineering. As a result such owner boards tend to vote down condo fee increases and prefer to vote down major capital expenditures in favour of cosmetics and amenity upgrades. It appears that is what happened here. The owners were warned by professionals three years ago that they needed to accept a special assessment cost in order to fund the structural repairs. Evidently the owners voted that down because they didn’t want to incur the expense. This was the tragic but inevitable outcome.
As horrifically sad as this is, in the end, the unit owners were the underlying problem. Condo regulations need to be reconsidered and condo boards must be redefined making it mandatory for boards to be overseen, and overridden on issues of vital infrastructure integrity.

I think there will be changes. The problem in this particular situation is that a Surfside building official looked over the structural report in 2018 and said, "the building was in good shape." I wouldn't be surprised if a lawsuit is made against the city.

When we say that prevention is better than cure, it essentially means that it is better to stop something before it happens instead of having to repair it or deal with its consequences after it has already been done.

Whose money? It’s a condo association. It has a Board, any resident of the condo can be on the Board and help push repairs that were needed. Every resident of that condo had financial responsibility to pay into the condo association fund that then can be used to make repairs

What mistake are you talking about? The 2018 structural certification report that keeps getting spoken about states the building was safe to inhabit for another decade. The body corporate had been raising funds to complete the repairs and were due to start later this year a full 7 years inside the safety window.

This isn't someone's mistake or fault it's just a thing that happened.

the templeton foundation funded a double blind study where a group of people prayed for a vaguely specific group of people facing struggles who didnt know they were being prayed for . not surprisingly the people being prayed for didnt show improvement compared to a similarly impared second group who werent being prayed for. the only real change that happened was when people in another similar group were told they were being prayed for their symptoms actually became worse . save your prayers or keep your prayers to yourself . if you can . which you cant . the prayers are to prove your goodness they benefit not the intended. in fact they will do more harm than good . incidentally the templeton foundation was trying to prove otherwise. lol

How are repairs like this optional anyway, I construct and maintain appartment blocks in Europe, structural repairs are not optional, everyone living in the building gets a bill, figure out a way to pay your share, if you can't, sell your appartment and leave. You can't just remove Rubbles by Rubbles with speed. Taking a wrong piece of rubble can cause further collapse of what they have, which can crush potentially stuck survivors underneathe.

I've read that the "special" assessment that was needed to repair this building would have been about $80,000.00 on a small one bedroom condo, up to $330,000.00 for a penthouse condo. Were the condo owners interested in paying this? Buyer Beware!

We have come to expect deadly disasters in our life times. Earth quakes, Tornados, hurricanes, Forrest fires, Tsunamis. Even sink holes. A 12 storey building caving in like a pancake??? It’s the eighth day & though the hopes of families are there, it’s looking like the inevitable that there won’t be survivors. This task is so incredibly difficult in that on one hand the teams have to show respect for human remains, while on the other hand there’s bodies decomposing. This would make it impossible for loved ones to see their relatives. When it comes to the demolition of the part of the building still standing. It’s another conundrum. I have seen the demolition experts completely bring down a building inwards in one pile, but those buildings were prepared before being brought down. They were skeletons. Glass removed. Electric wires, inflammable objects etc. all taken out. This building is fully furnished. How on earth will they get everything out from a building that could collapse anytime?? It’s unbelievable & probably a once in a lifetime event. R.I.P. beautiful souls.

With the outrageous cost of living in Fl. I don't think is worth it. On top of that FL is the sink hole state. It happen way too often compare to the other 49 states and territories AND hurricanes almost yearly. I grew up in the Caribbean and we have the same hurricane threats but man they seems to go straight to FL. Thank God not all hit them hard. Ugh too much drama in that state!

First 72 hours is the best rescue time. While the rescue team took 16 hours to start the rescue. Mean while 7 days has passed and they expect survivor alive under this mess.

Imagine if they found someone in a vehicle in the garage area. The medical bills could be in the tens of millions to keep them alive for life. Let's be real, people like the rescue workers are scared to get sued. It's better off if they have no idea and when they find the people who were alive, they hope they are dead (hopefully into a better afterlife).

@Bobbybeatz there would be more chances to find air pockets or people alive near the basement than at the top of the wreckage which is all pancaked. But regardless of where they started, it has been over a week so it is highly unlikely to find anyone alive now, but the risks still exist for the rescuers. Maybe they should or could continue for the sake of the families affected by this but not because there are real chances of finding anyone now.

Because the search itself can be dangerous for the rescuers/firefighters too as things could still collapse over them. It's almost impossible anyone is alive under that debris at this point and it's so unfortunate and i can't even imagine their family members. But it's just not realistic to keep risking rescuers lives at this point.

They have to protect their own lives, too. And at a week since the last survivor, it's highly unlikely any of those people are alive. The body will shut down very quickly without water. At this point, it's a recovery mission, not a rescue one.

There is as it is called "maintenance fee", which Condo owners pay monthly to keep the building up. From reports on the news, they knew the pool was leaking since 1990 and 3 years ago a full engineering study showed major damage that needed to be done, costing $9 million and $3 million needed to be done right away on the pool. News reports said the Owners Association had discussed it for the past 3 yrs, but they didn't want to spend the money.
