Stormy Monday
T‐Bone Walker Lyrics

They call it stormy Monday but Tuesday's just as bad
They call it stormy Monday but Tuesday's just as bad
Wednesday's worse and Thursday's also sad

Yes, the eagle flies on Friday and Saturday I go out to play
Eagle flies on Friday and Saturday I go out to play
Sunday I go to church, then I kneel down and pray
Lord have mercy, Lord have mercy on me

Lord have mercy, my heart's in misery
Crazy about my baby, yes, send her back to me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to T-Bone Walker's "Stormy Monday" paint a picture of never-ending sadness and despair. The first two lines reveal how life is hard not only on Monday, but also on Tuesday with Wednesday and Thursday gnawing at the character's joy. The phrase "stormy Monday" is used as a metaphor for the struggles of everyday life, and the line "Tuesday's just as bad" implies that the problems are not limited to one specific day of the week. The song suggests that nothing changes, no matter what day it is or what happens, and that the blues could strike at any time.

The next verses depict the character's weekend. The metaphorical eagle that flies on Friday represents the character’s luck, and the fact that they can let loose on Saturdays suggests that they have taken the opportunity to find some inspiration in life. Sundays, however, are still somber, and the only thing that brings solace is prayer. The last verse reveals that the song is essentially a love song because the character has lost their beloved one and yearns for her to come back. The prayer is for mercy, and the character acknowledges that their heart is in misery because of the absence of the aforementioned love interest.

I would agree, certainly among the top
5, I love Bobby Blands vocal treatment
of this song, and his arrangement was
9 times better than the original, with the
classy chord changes. Best Blues singer
of all time was Greg Allman.
I grew up listening to the Allman Bros
recording of this song, same arrangement
as Bobby's, what a masterpiece. They are
all missed, incredible talents.

@@grantsmythe8625 Yeah, and Dickie
never got the credit that he deserved,
'back in the day' all we had was
recordings and live performances, so
it was hard to know who was doing
what in a given song. Both him and
Duane were top notch. I think the biggest
selling single was Dickie's song;
Ramblin Man, not my favorite from the
Allmans but a fantastic song, seemed
a bit out of character to me for the
AB's but really a great song, from an
incredible player.

I played bari sax on a recording by Mr. Walker in 1966. That was a big deal for me as a teenager. I guess it still is.
