Careless
T.G.L Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

Time can never mend
The careless whispers of a good friend
To the heart and mind
Ignorance is kind
There's no comfort in the truth
Pain is all you'll find

Tonight the music seems so loud
I wish that we could lose this crowd
Maybe it's better this way
We'd hurt each other with the things we'd want to say
We could have been so good together
We could have lived this dance forever
But now who's gonna dance with me?
Please stay

I'm never gonna dance again
Guilty feet have got no rhythm
Though it's easy to pretend
I know you're not a fool
Should've known better than to cheat a friend
And waste the chance that I'd been given
So I'm never gonna dance again
The way I danced with you

Now that you're gone
Now that you're gone

Was what I did so wrong so wrong
That you had to leave me alone.

Overall Meaning

T.G.L's song "Careless" is a melancholic ballad that revolves around the theme of regret and heartbreak. The singer starts off by expressing how they are never going to dance again as their guilty feet have got no rhythm. They realize that it's easy to pretend but that the listener is not a fool. The second stanza emphasizes the regret as they should have known better than to cheat a friend and waste the chance they had been given. The singer then repeats the chorus, stating that they will never dance again, the way they danced with you.

The following verse, "Time can never mend the careless whispers of a good friend, To the heart and mind, ignorance is kind, there's no comfort in the truth, pain is all you'll find.", talks about how the whispers of a good friend who they have cheated on, can never be mended with time. The well-known phrase "Ignorance is bliss" takes on new meaning as the ignorance of the mistake is easier to bear than the painful truth. The singer then goes on to say how loud the music seems tonight, and how they wish the crowd could be lost. The following lines contemplate how, in reality, it might be better this way, as they could hurt each other with the things they would want to say. They end the song by grieving over the fact that the dance could have been forever, however, now that they're gone, the singer is faced with being alone.

That was absolutely gorgeous. The first scene made me shiver and hold on to my teeth, but everything was stellar. The actors are phenomenal, the little one is absolutely phenomenal; so much comes through his eyes! The story, the music, the composition, the backgrounds, the colors, the use of light and shadows, THE CREATURE and the acting choices made for them is genius. Needless to say that i loved it!
