Break
T.O. Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Morning breaks on skates
Noon breeze on skis
Nights are black as tar
Tell me what goes on at night
When the kids are sleeping tight?

The toboggans in the night
Slide away upon the hill
The toboggans in the night
Slide away of their own will
Louis saw them, yes he did
Underneath the moon's glow
Louis saw them, yes he did
They were his, so he should know

Morning breaks on skates
Noon breeze on skis
Nights are black as tar
Tell me what goes on at night
When the kids are sleeping tight?

The toboggans and the skis
Leave no tracks upon the snow
The toboggans and the skis
They are silent as they go
And the skates upon the lake
Twist and twirl but never fall
But the skates upon the lake
Have no feet in them at all

Morning breaks on skates
Noon breeze on skis
Nights are black as tar
Tell me what goes on at night
When the kids are sleeping tight?

In the morning we can see
That the sleds are still around
But the skates and all the skis
They are nowhere to be found
You'll find a ski up on the hill
You'll find a skate under a cap
It all depends upon the chill
And if the kids have had their nap

Morning breaks on skates

Noon breeze on skis
Nights are black as tar

Overall Meaning

The song "Break" by T.O is a beautiful piece that explores the mysterious happenings of the night, particularly in the context of winter sports such as skiing, skating, and tobogganing. The lyrics are divided into three stanzas, each starting with the line "Morning breaks on skates, Noon breeze on skis, Nights are black as tar" followed by a curious question about what goes on in the night when the kids are sleeping tight.

In the first stanza, the focus is on tobogganing, and the lyrics speak of how the sleds slide away on their own in the night, under the moon's glow. Louis saw them, implying that Louis is a witness to these events, and so the listener is encouraged to believe the mysterious happenings taking place. The second stanza speaks of the silence of the winter sports, with toboggans, skis, and skates leaving no tracks upon the snow as they glide through the night.

The last stanza brings the song to a close by pointing out that in the morning, the sleds are still around, but the skates and skis are nowhere to be found. The whereabouts of the skates and skis are dependent on the chill in the air and if the kids had napped. The song does not answer the question that it raises about the night but leaves the interpretation up to the listener. The inference is that something magical happens when kids play.

I want to break free
I want to break free
I want to break free from your lies
You're so self satisfied, I don't need you
I've got to break free
God knows, God knows I want to break free

I've fallen in love
I've fallen in love for the first time
And this time I know it's for real
I've fallen in love, yeah
God knows, God knows I've fallen in love

It's strange, but it's true, yeah
I can't get over the way you love me like you do
But I have to be sure
When I walk out that door
Oh, how I want to be free, baby
Oh, how I want to be free
Oh, how I want to break free

But life still goes on
I can't get used to living without, living without
Living without you by my side
I don't want to live alone, hey
God knows, got to make it on my own
So, baby, can't you see?
I've got to break free

I've got to break free
I want to break free, yeah
I want, I want, I want, I want to break free

On the last day at my old job that I really hated, I played this song out loud. I felt like such a prisoner at that job, whenever Freddie sang "oh how i want to be free" i almost started crying because I was so thankful to be quitting. That song takes me back to that moment and im so greatful.
