1) TATUM is what you get when two young vocalists were rocking out in the front row at every possible gig they attended. Twins, Lelani and Leandi found their passion in writing their own music and lyrics and was desperately in need of a ROCK band. Drummer, Werner von Waltsleben(K.O.B.U.S) and guitarist, Christiaan Blom joined and TATUM was formed.
The Cape town based group burst onto the scene after they released their first track on the “Bellville Rock City” compilation album released by Rhythm Records. The label approached the band to record the track with acclaimed rock producer, Theo Crous and it did very well on numerous campus radio stations and was also play listed on 5fm. Since the release they played in and around Cape town spreading their fresh take on female-fronted rock and roll!
The group went back into the rehearsal room to start writing music that really captured them as musicians. They headed back into the studio once more with Theo Crous to start working on their first official EP which is to be released early 2012. The latest TATUM offerings are a perfect blend between modern rock-and-roll and pop and consists of tracks you can dance and rock out to at the same time while being captivated with strong melodic vocal lines, straight ahead rocking drums and memorable guitar hooks.
TATUM is a breath of fresh air in the South African Music industry where they hope to create and sustain a dominant presence.
2) Mic'Heal Tatum better known as his stage name ( TATUM ) was born on February 21st. Tragedy struck him at the tender age of 3 as he literally watched his father killed in his front yard over a drug deal gone wrong. However; it wasn’t until he was 10 years old that he was told the man was actually his biological father, and not his “uncle” as he had been previously told. His mother was also absent in most of his childhood, due to circumstances that were beyond anyone’s control. So without a mother or father, basically an orphan, Tatum was raised in and out of various foster homes. He was labeled a loser and a nothing, look down upon his whole childhood. In spite all of these negative things in his life; he changed his way of thinking and way of living. In 1998, Tatum graduated from Petersburg High School. Growing up in Washington, D.C. and the Northern Virginia area he was influenced by all types of music. Music has always been in his blood. It has been an escape from reality for him. His drug of choice, you could say. What started out as a book of poems he started writing in the 2nd grade has turned into a testimony of his life. His music is heart-felt and brutally honest. His rhymes tell a story of heartache, pain, and also overcoming trials and tribulations. Tatum joined the United States Army, following in the steps of his grandfather, step-father, and uncles. He has been to Germany, France and also did more than a few tours in Iraq. Tragedy struck once again while in Iraq. He was not only stabbed in the side and shot twice, but also hit with an IED (improvised explosive device) Bomb. So he is definitely the living proof of A SURVIVOR! On September 1, 2000, Tatum married Denise Watkins (Denise Tatum) and they have three beautiful children: Mic’Kiya age 11,Mic’Kayja age 8, and MicKaKari age 6. He has also in recent years reconnected with his mother and father.
Tea For Two
TATUM Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Darling this place is a lover's oasis where life's weary chase is unknown.
Far from the cry of the city, where flowers pretty caress the streams,
Cozy to hide in, to love side-by-side in. Don't let it abide in my dreams.
Picture you upon my knee, just tea for two and two for tea,
Just me for you and you for me, alone!
Nobody near us, to see us or hear us,
We won't have it known, dear, that we have a telephone, dear.
Day will break and you'll awake and start to bake
A sugar cake for me to take for all the boys to see.
We will raise a family, a boy for you, a girl for me,
Oh, can't you see how happy life would be?
You are revealing a plan so appealing I can't help but falling for you,
Darling, I planned it
Can't you understand it is yours to command it, so do.
All of your schemes I'm admiring, they're worth desiring but can't you see,
I'd like to wait there for some future date dear
It won't be too late, dear, for me.
Picture you upon my knee, just tea for two and two for tea,
Just me for you and you for me, alone!
Nobody near us, to see us or hear us,
No friends or relations on weekend vacations,
We won't have it known, dear, that we have a telephone, dear.
Day will break and you'll awake and start to bake
A sugar cake for me to take for all the boys to see.
We will raise a family, a boy for you, a girl for me,
Oh, can't you see how happy life would be?
The lyrics to TATUM's song Tea For Two depict a scenario where the singer is discontented with rented homes and creates their own lover's oasis. The place is far from the city's cry and has a cozy hideaway where the singer can be with their loved one. The plan is to be alone, with nobody near to see or hear them, no friends or relatives, and no known telephone numbers. The singer pictures themselves on the knee of their loved one, with just tea for two and two for tea. Nobody to interrupt, they will be baking a cake for the future with a boy for the loved one and a girl for the singer. The song tells the story of a couple who wants to start their life together, away from the hustle and bustle of the city.

Compare Mr. Tatum's brilliant arrangement here with the COMPOSER Vincent Youmans, playing "Tea for Two" as part of his "No, No Nanette" medley (that was the title of the Broadway show in which this, and many other tunes, were introduced in 1924). Mr. Youmans recorded this for the American Piano Co. in about 1924 for their popular "Ampico" brand reproducing pianos.
We hear it played back on an Ampico in good order (not TOP condition, but playing alright with very noticeable dynamics and close to in tune).
The holes at the far left and right edges of the paper / tracker bar activate the Ampico's automatic expression system, making the bass and treble of the piano louder and softer on command as programmed by the arrangers of the master roll in the factory (which in turn was based closely upon what Mr. Youmans himself played on their recording piano).
I cannot get over how gorgeous and years-ahead-of-their-time the chord voicings are in this 1924 roll... but then again, all the 'hippest' popular, salon, jazz etc pianists of the day were starting to go to these more forward-looking chords and start using them in more advanced ways (i. e. 'catching up' to where classical music had already gone with Brahms, Franck, Faure, Delius etc. etc. although of course his usage is generally much simpler than many of these composers).
Vincent Youmans was supposed to be an 'ear playing' pianist who, at least originally, could only play in one key, Gb major, and not read or write music. If this is true, by the time he made this roll he was certainly able to modulate and play in other keys, and his command of harmony is remarkable for an 'ear player'. I'm not discounting this story, as the 1910s/20s were littered with remarkable 'ear players' who managed to successfully hold down a career in popular music despite not being able to read (although, a great many of them DID eventually learn to read music, by necessity if for no other reason). I liken this to the many great rock guitarists of their day, who could not (or cannot) read or write music, but have an uncanny musical ear and grasp of harmony and musical aesthetics. If he still couldn't read by the time he made this roll (of his own compositions), that is a major accomplishment:

@douwemusic
Art Tatum improvised this while blind and Shostakovich apparently orchestrated the tune in 30 minutes as part of a bet. Those two deserve all the tea

Yes! They had it together!

of course shostakovich did that

Art and Shostakovich met ?

Save some of the tea for the composer of the composer of the music, Vincent Youmans. Also, I love the the lyrics, by Irving Caesar. If these two had not composed it for the musical No, No, Nanette! it would not have been available to improvise around or orchestrate on.
