Are We Arc?
TR/ST Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Can we go back to the times
Just you and I
Before we drifted away
And our area turned gray
Can we go back to the times
When we'd fantasize
And we'd look up at the stars
Never thought we'd fall apart
But here we are
Reminisce about the times we had
When the love was young, girl you drive me mad
Now you're more a stranger and I hate that
Now you're more a stranger and I hate that
I've been in my head
Overthinking 'bout what we are
Have I let my feelings go too far
I don't know but can we go
Back to the times
Just you and I
Before we drifted away
And our area turned gray
Can we go back to the times
When we'd fantasize
And we'd look up at the stars
Never thought we'd fall apart
But here we are
All the memories just left behind
We had something special no one can deny
We had a connection from the very first night
Never thought I'd feel love at first sight
But I feel it in my heart
We aren't meant to be apart
Can we go back to the start
I don't know but can we go
Back to the times
Just you and I
Before we drifted away
And our area turned gray
Can we go back to the times
When we'd fantasize
And we'd look up at the stars

Never thought we'd fall apart
But here we are

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of TR/ST's song "Are We Arc?" seem to tell the story of people from two different environments - the ghetto and the country - coming together under the banner of the "golden ones" or the "chosen ones." The ghetto represents the night, the stars that shine in the dark and Nana who knows how to soothe everyone. On the other hand, the country is full of stars, but they're in a war and the person in the song hopes to medicate the painful ache to change his fate. Joy is present in both scenarios, but in different ways. It's something that the woman in the ghetto won't let go of, while for the man in the country, it's something he doesn't know. The repeated line of "We're never alone" reinforces the idea that the two groups of people can come together to form a community of solidarity.

The song is open to interpretation, but one reading could be that it is about finding joy and hope in difficult, isolated environments but also recognizing that these experiences are interconnected with larger global issues such as war. The song ends with the repeated phrase "Tell the truth" which could be a call to honesty in addressing these collective struggles.

:) Pretty close, but:

You ride brazen on the fire,
we chase the mercy down,
I’m getting used to the loneliest of sounds.

The voltage running mightily
Your joy personified
You’ve fallen inward all while hopping heights of heights,
and hoping heights of high.

Are we Arc?
Brace yourself
They comin' for you
Second breаth
Anywhere you're tuning in
I'll do my best to harbor it

And you've seen some high??
I'm incarcerate
I'm happy to be kicking it

You ride breezing on the fire
We taste the mercy doubt??
I'm getting used to the loneliest of sounds
The voltage running might be
Your joy personified
You've fallen inward (oh) while
I'm hoping heights of heights
And hoping heights of high

Love for you
My forehead to my big toe/to my bed to womb/wound?
And this mess I'm in
I'll trade it for a second skin

And you've seen some high?
And there you punctured it
It's gone and left a kink in me

You ride breezing on the fire?
We taste the mercy doubt
I'm getting used to the loneliest of sounds
The voltage running might be
Your joy personified
You've fallen inward (oh) while
I'm hoping heights of heights
And hoping heights of high

Louse on me (lasso me)
Louse to my feet (lost in my feet/fear)
Louse on me (lasso me)
Some speck underneath
Louse on me

"I'm getting used to the loneliest of sounds"
The peaceful melancholy of this song really gets me every time. It's amazing how apparently meaningless lyrics (or at least lyrics without a clear unambiguous meaning) can combine with the deep and resonating melody and singing to create a profoundly relatable music. It's as if the gaps in meaning left in the text provided just enough space for the listener to project his own feelings guided by the atmosphere of the sounds. The strength of Robert Alfons' text is its ability to talk about experiences that normally lie beyond the scope of language.

Olivier Couture-Bienvenue so well defined. I love this song, and feel it resonates hugely, yet no idea what it's about. Yet I know EXACTLY what feeling it evokes. If that makes sense. Beautiful.
