by the light of the northern star
TYR Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

In the mass grave of mythology lie the legends of the past
Discarded superstitions,
Although once held high both in honour and in awe
Now they have fallen too far to rise, and closed their eyes
The time and the tide
From yearning years of want on to dark days of wane
We have walked by the light of the northern star
From frozen fjords of rime out to swift seas of raid
We have sailed by the light of the northern star
The northern night has never seen

The southern cross shine bright
Across the colder seas under rain ridden skies
We go on by the light of the northern star
May the mighty Mj?lnir nail the bleeding
And naked Nazarene upon the pagan planks
Pound in the painful nails now and hang him high and dry
Or have we fallen too far to rise and closed our eyes
The time and the tide

Have we fallen too far to rise and closed our eyes
The time and the tide

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "By the Light of the Northern Star" by TYR explore the idea of the enduring power of myth and the passing of time. The opening lines suggest that while the myths of the past have been discarded as superstition, they were once held in high regard and were revered as important. The reference to a "mass grave of mythology" is a powerful image that suggests that these stories, although no longer believed in, still carry weight and power, like the dead buried in a mass grave.

The chorus speaks to the endurance of certain symbols and ideas over time, specifically referencing the northern star. The star, which has guided many a sailor and traveler over the centuries, has seen many changes in human history, from the Viking age to the spread of Christianity to the present day. The song acknowledges the passing of time and the changing of eras, but emphasizes that certain things endure.

The closing lines of the song take a more confrontational tone, suggesting that the singer may be a pagan or a non-Christian who is angry at the historical treatment of their beliefs. The reference to nailing the "naked Nazarene" to the "pagan planks" is a clear reference to the crucifixion of Jesus Christ, and the suggestion that the singer hopes to do the same is a powerful, if violent, rejection of Christianity. The repeated refrain "Have we fallen too far to rise and closed our eyes/The time and the tide" suggests a sense of inevitability and resignation in the face of historical change.

Nich Hanson

"The northern night has never seen the southern cross shine bright" is such a brilliant line when you learn that the southern cross is a constellation in the southern hemisphere.

"They fall, Einherjar, those who fight, Einherjar, those who drink, Einherjar" I'm Faroese, and that's what I translate it to, but I think it seems more like Icelandic than Old Norse... Not sure though, never learned Icelandic nor Old Norse myself :)

One True Vikingbard

did ANYONE appreciate the musicianship of Týr on this album? because, as usual, their sound is kick-ass! if they make a sixth studio album, do you think they should cover a song from bathory's viking-metal years? (heri has admitted that quothorn was an inspiration of his, so i don't see why not)

Borvo

Great album art
