Tell you, you can do it all,
But they really wanna see you down in
The shadows.
'cause they can't ever learn to fly,
They don't wanna see you in the sky,
But they really wanna see you down in
The shadows.
[Pre Chorus]
(I know I know) they don't believe in us
(I know I know) we're meant to be
Because,
We both share our lives in the light
[Chorus]
And I Say...
They ain't never go'n get us [x4]
Tell me are these words familiar,
That man, he ain't good enough,
But they really wanna see you down in
The shadows.
They won't tell it to your face,
All you gotta do is fall from grace,
But they really wanna see you down in
The shadows.
[Pre Chorus]
I know I know they don't believe in us,
I know I know we're meant to be
Because,
We both Share our lives in the light.
[Chorus]
They don't know about the things we
Do, They don't understand it's just us
Two,
Why they always tryina intervene, They
Don't understand that it's our dream,
Well, to the left, to the left,we should
Tell them to get to the left,
Why they always tryina intervene, They
Don't understand that it's our dream...
[Chorus x2]
In Taio Cruz's song “Never Gonna Get Us”, the lyrics are a commentary on the negative attitudes and motivations of others who seek to bring you down. The opening lines, “They build you up to watch you fall, tell you, you can do it all, but they really wanna see you down in the shadows,” are an expression of how people may pretend to be supportive or encouraging but deep down want to see you fail. The line, “'cause they can't ever learn to fly, they don't wanna see you in the sky,” implies that those who put others down are often jealous or envious of their success or potential.
In the pre-chorus, Taio Cruz sings, “they don't believe in us, we're meant to be because we both share our lives in the light.” Here he is stating that despite the negative attitudes of others, they do not have to drag you down. You can continue to share your life in the light, being true to yourself and your dreams. The chorus, “they ain't never go'n get us,” is a declaration that no matter what others say or do, they will never be able to fully bring you down. You will continue to rise above the negativity and succeed.
The second verse continues the theme of others' negative attitudes towards success. The line “tell me are these words familiar, that man, he ain't good enough,” is representative of how some people may be quick to discredit or devalue the talents or abilities of others. The lyrics state that these people won't say it to your face, but will only be waiting for you to fall from grace. The pre-chorus and chorus are then repeated, emphasizing the message of not letting others’ negative attitudes hold you back.
