After college, Mahal moved to Los Angeles and formed the group Rising Sons with Ry Cooder in 1964. The group signed with Columbia Records and released one single and recorded another album which was not released by Columbia until 1992. Taj, frustrated with the mixed reaction to his music quit the group and went solo. Still with Columbia, he released a well received, self titled album in 1968, and based on its success released a second album, Natch'l Blues that same year. Two very different records - Giant Step, with his electric band, and solo De Ole Folks at Home - were released in 1969 together as a double album. This firmly established Taj as an American blues original. The double album The Real Thing, captured him live at this time, with a horn section.
He has received two Grammy awards in the category "Best Contemporary Blues Album", the first in 1997 for Señor Blues, and again in 2000 for Shoutin' in Key. He has performed on various film soundtracks including Sounder and Blues Brothers 2000, in which he also appeared.

Some joker got lucky, stole her back again
You better come on in my kitchen, it's goin' to be rainin' outdoors
When a woman gets in trouble, everybody throws her down
Looking for a good friend, none can be found
And the time's comin', it's goin' to be so
You can't make the winter, babe, just try long so
The song "Come on in My Kitchen" by Taj Mahal tells the story of a man who had a relationship with a woman, but then his best friend took her away from him. Eventually, the friend loses her and the man invites her back into his kitchen, looking to comfort her as she faces troubled times. The chorus suggests that the weather outside is raining, and that the kitchen is a warm and welcoming place.
Through the lyrics, Taj Mahal reveals the difficulties that women face in a society where they are often judged harshly when they get into trouble. The line "When a woman gets in trouble, everybody throws her down" highlights the social stigma that women face when they go through tough times. Despite this, the man in the song shows himself to be a loyal friend, welcoming her back into his kitchen and offering her a safe haven from the storm.
Overall, "Come on in My Kitchen" is a song about love, loyalty, and second chances. Taj Mahal's powerful vocals and intricate guitar work create an intimate atmosphere, drawing listeners in and making them feel as though they are standing right there in his kitchen. The song's universal themes have made it a classic, loved by generations of music fans.
