You cannot begin to comprehend what you're missing - unless you live in the middle of nowhere, there will be a college or university with a jazz music program near you - this is a Jazz standard, it will be performed fairly regularly during recitals - either figure out when these are and attend (they're usually open to the public and very happy to have people show up), or befriend some of the musicians - you wont regret it.

That’s called class. These guys were great artists, elite musicians. The respect they had for the music is reflected in their attire. You didn’t go on stage looking like a burned out pot head or homeless person when you had the great task of playing the only genre of music “native” to the United States. I expressly remember my band director in sixth grade showing us this video to demonstrate what pulse is and how you can keep a steady tempo even if you're doing something as crazy as an intense drum solo. I never expected to find it ever again, but we were playing this for my Sophomore year last year and I only now just came to find a recording of it and here it is. I was in college a few years after this came out and Joe came to do a clinic. I had sort of learned my version of this on piano when I was a young teen so I went. We were able to ask him questions and the Beatles had just hit so one question was do you like the way Ringo holds his sticks. He began rearranging his set and said "actually you should be able to hold your sticks in either hand however works best for you" or something to that effect and then he started to play left handed so to speak and you could not tell the difference. I was a budding musician at the time and he just basically went on from there with a mind blowing solo since it was just him. And his foot was legendary. He sat at one point just playing sustained rapid fire bass drum hits. One bass drum. It was unbelievable. An experience I'll never forget, and that was almost 60 years ago. I don't know who the greatest drummer would be if there was a way to know, but he'd be on the list for sure.

My parents (lucky me) were into jazz and had all the contemporary albums available at the time. This, from the album Time Out, is a stand-out to this day. Paul Desmond, the incredible sax player, was ravaged by the drugs and alcohol so common in the industry. He dies pretty much broke in a small apartment in NYC.

I was a pre-teen when I first heard this. My older cousins (musicians) were playing the LP. I had to ask if I could listen to it. Little did I how much I would come to like jazz. I'm in my 70's now and still smile at the sounds!

One of the greatest nights of my life was taking my dad to see Dave. Wow, we were entranced....and Dave came across as the nicest person. I just love how he turns around to watch Joe do his stuff. French grip open handed, played the ride with his right-hand....a pioneer of modern drum playing. Xx

It out-miled Miles and his more abstract arrangements that never captured the simplicity or listenability of Mr. Brubeck's flagship composition. As others have noted, it is a legacy live recording which is as much fun to watch as it is to listen to. American jazz, copied around the world, but born and raised in the USA.

Oh my god! Listened to every of my dad's jazz albums as a kid in the 1970ies and sucked up even more as a young man. But this version of Take Five is just...it's just a prove that civilization topped to the pinnacle intellectually back then.
You don't have a Morello, Desmond, Wright or Brubeck today, delivering same kind of originallity breaking the chains of general patterns, challenging the experimental, yet so fine within the framework and high, high, high class.

I love how their looks at one another seem so JUDGMENTAL AND SEVERE, but then when you look again you realize that they're trying to enjoy the incredible performance of their peers while simultaneously concentrating on their very demanding parts. It took 100% from everyone, and the result of their effort can amaze and delight listeners more than half a century later. What astonishing artists. What accomplishment. This is musical treasure.

What a lot of us fail to realise is both the physical (suits, ties etc.) and emotional (let’s be “looking cool”) restraints that were part of the scene in those days, were arguably responsible for this technical and musical masterpiece. Watching this live clip really highlights the tension, the energy and the synergy between these musicians. They weren’t taking it easy playing some cool jazz. This was serious, intense and tight musicianship at it’s very best. Phenomenal piece of music played by consummate professionals that will stand the test of all time. I have no doubt this will be listened to in 500 years time, and beyond.

Yep, perfectly said. People nowdays look to those times as everything was perfect and beautiful. But what they don't realise is that a lot - and I mean A LOT - of work was put on the image and etiquette to have this kind of appearance. You can be sure that they appear "happy" and "cool" but they probably were as nervous as a person can get to perform live - even in studio - as they were doing here. This can be applied for the whole "TV and Radio" scene of the era - 20s to 60s -
