One of the most important and underrated nutritional topics of our time. Finally, we're waking up to how important it is, relative to sodium.

Another important note: DON'T take your RDA of potassium all at once. Your kidneys and body can't absorb the serum (blood) potassium that quickly all at once, which is why it's important with certain nutrients to absorb slow and steady rather than a bolus. Even the massive potassium pill doctors give you are time-released.

Eating 'real' foods like fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, cheeses, meats, seafood, yoghurt etc. Stuff like chips, crackers, biscuits, chocolates, etc will have far less nutrients than 'real' foods.

Good breakdown on the importance of potassium. I have Hypokalemic Periodic Paralysis and have to take two diuretics: Acetazolamide and Spironolactone. I have to modify my diet and workout routine , but it is still possible to live a normal, healthy life 👍

Love your videos. I would say some really important but overlooked nutrients would be copper, zinc, Vitamin B12 and D, boron, chromium, magnesium, quercetin and silica.

I would seriously love if you did a video exploring or even ranking. One on bitter greens especially the over looked ones rarely used in North America and one on 'weeds' such as nettle, purslane, dandelion greens and root, lambs quarters, etc. Their is some really great nutrients on these foods and they really deserve a spotlight.

Edit.... Dandelion greens is an amazing source of potassium too. It is a very good diuretic but doesn't deplete the body of potassium either in case anyone wants to know.

I eat 95% whole foods, plant and animal, and have a pretty big appetite, yet when I do calculations of my normal daily diet, that 3,400 # is pretty hard to reach. Not just potassium, but several others too. I often wonder if the RDA's are correct.

I’m intrigued by the fact that more of our bodily water is composed dominantly by potassium rather than sodium. Does that mean that sports drinks like body armor that prioritize potassium in their electrolytes are more effective than gatorade that prioritizes sodium? I never knew potassium was so important, but I think I get a good intake given my love for pistachios

For atleast 2 days a week i use potatoes as my carb source however hitting 3.5 grams of potassium daily seems really hard even with the amount of potatoes i eat (about 600 grams and it has around 2.4grams of potassium) the amount of chicken i eat also has 1.2 grams of potassium(500grams of chicken) but other days it is really hard to reach 3.4 so wht should we do
Maybe hitting "potassium goals" is not that impotant for muscle growth but it really helps with the water retention and puffy face

I drink a lot of water but I'm struggling to understand the correct amount of electrolytes I need and how to get them in a chicken, eggs, fruits, veggie and rice diet so I can hydrate as efficiently as possible. I have a multi vitamin w very little electrolytes and I eat a banana and half an avocado every day. I know there's effervescent tablets and stuff but I'm trying not to drop 10-20 bucks a month on that alone.

You could try dandelion greens and stinging nettle greens. Both have very large amounts of so many of these nutrients and they are easy to add to so many things, sauces, soups, stir-fried, salads, etc.

i find potassium very confusing. there is no way most of us get anywhere near 3-5000 mg per day. it seems to me a person would have to eat a fairly specific diet daily and a lot of it.

Do you drink water? in 1l of averege bottle water you have 1.1mg of potassium which is like 33% od daily recommended size. Add to this all food you eat during a day, and bam you are at finish line

Well what do you mean by diets? When I think diets I think named diets. Carnivore. Vegan. Keto. Low fat. Mediterranean. The reason why there's so many of them is because they don't work for everyone. There's too many variables regarding an individual and their diet even just considering where they are and where they're going. And also importantly what they enjoy and will actually consistently eat. What I'm trying to do is hand you the building blocks to build an individual diet. What are the essential pieces, what are the pieces that can be replaced, exchanged and rotated. Trying to get you to think about what you need because no one else is actually going to be able to tell you that. Sorry there's no easy answers. And if you build that diet yourself and it turns out to be a popular model then great for you. But there really is no easy way to objectively measure such complexities like diets

Sorry for the long response I'm just so annoyed that I'm not getting this point across in the videos somehow

I tend to rely on NCCDB, where sunflower seeds rank even higher than pumpkin seeds - they are amazing for so many nutrients tbh it's crazy
