Catalina
Tangled Hair Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Don't fall apart, don't fall apart
Don't put the stress on your weary heart
I want to see the wreck, want to see the mess
It can't be as bad as they say it is
Say it is

Don't take the things that I said as true
I feel so lucky to have found you

And I've got the right
To change my mind whenever I like
And you were the same
As you always were in the old days
I'll picture the view without you

You have been so lucky
You have been so lucky
Falling from skyscrapers
Onto feather mattresses

If you spoke in fact
Then I could relax

If you can be real
Tell me how you feel

Overall Meaning

The song "Catalina" by Tangled Hair is a song that reflects the struggle of dealing with difficulties and stress in one's life. The opening lines, "Don't fall apart, don't fall apart, don't put the stress on your weary heart," serve as a kind of mantra repeating that things may be difficult but you must keep it together. The next few lines, "I want to see the wreck, want to see the mess, it can't be as bad as they say it is," seem, at first, contradictory. However, they can be understood as a person trying to take on their struggles by confronting them head-on, and even though it might be a difficult road, it can't be as bad as people make it out to be.

The second verse of the song shifts gears, and the song becomes more about a relationship. The repeated line "Don't take the things that I said as true, I feel so lucky to have found you," seems like a bit of a reassurance to the listener that they are loved and appreciated even when things in their lives may seem overwhelming. The lines, "I've got the right to change my mind whenever I like and you were the same as you always were in the old days, I'll picture the view without you," seem to be the singer acknowledging the fluidity of life and relationships, but also implying that the person they are addressing has been a constant support throughout change.

The final lines, "You have been so lucky, falling from skyscrapers onto feather mattresses, if you spoke in fact then I could relax, if you can be real, tell me how you feel," have a somewhat darker tone to them. It casts the listener as someone who has been very lucky who has had a soft landing despite being in difficult situations. But then it questions the listener's authenticity, asking them to be truthful or honest in how they feel. It's almost as if the singer is saying that they feel like their own struggles are being minimized or ignored by someone who has had an easier time than they have. The song ends on this questioning and unresolved note.
