Pantaloons
Tape Five Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Magic mirror – on the wall, who's the fairest chick of them all,
Swinging dobedoo – do the do, like betty boop?
It said: Tonight josephine, try something keen!
Soon, get off your pantaloons!

Get in your step-ins and then you will feel alright.
A brandnew cologne, don't tie your skirt too tight!
It makes you shake your leg to the magnetic waltz
Magic ballrooms wont play no schmaltz!

Mirror, mirror up on the wall, who's the fairest of them all,
Trying hard bedoo-bedee, be a jazzage baby?
It said: Tonight josephine, stay on the scene!
Real soon, get off your pantaloons!

Magic mirror – on the wall, who's the fairest chick of them all,
Swinging dobedoo do the do, like betty boop?
It said: Tonight josephine, try something keen!
Coda:

High noon, get off your pantaloons.
Now, get off your pantaloons!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Tape Five's "Pantaloons" revolve around the idea of self-expression and self-acceptance. The song starts with the phrase "Magic mirror – on the wall, who's the fairest chick of them all," which is a reference to the famous line from the story of Snow White. However, instead of wanting to be the fairest of them all, the song encourages embracing one's own unique style and personality.

The lyrics continue with the suggestion to try something new and exciting, represented by the phrase "Try something keen!" This can be interpreted as an invitation to step out of one's comfort zone and break free from societal expectations. The line "Get in your step-ins and then you will feel alright" further emphasizes the importance of feeling comfortable in one's own skin.

I love you guys. I'm sad you're not more popular, because music like this was some of the best made in its time, in my opinion. Came from a memorable era. Hats off to you, and don't stop what you're doing.

i've never heard this kind of music before (or never gave it a real listen) but it's great to dance to!

I think this is one of the best clip on the world. The camera work is simply excellent. I like the different angles movements. Would be interesting to see a kind of "making of" doc.

I love the 20's. The jazz of Dixie, the jazz of New Orleans rules!  Economy was on the move, the music was lively, the times were merry -- the roaring 20s.

swing is more known in the 40's and this is electro swing, so not even the "20s" style. if you want real swing from the 40s check out Glenn Miller, he practically created swing.

jaelob

no, i don't want 40s swing, that was the era of the big bands and Glen Miller, which drowned out the poetic soul and counterpoint of the 20's which could more accurately be described as Dixie.  (But I do enjoy Miller's In the Mood.) The genre might be called electro swing, but the tent is big and this song in particular not only is 20s style, but so is the video obviously.  I know what I'm talking about.  Furthermore, the 20s did include swing, it was an earlier kind of swing with a Dixie flavor, out of which the 40s developed albeit on a different road altogether.  Today, swing may be more known to be in the 40s out of retrospect, but I still prefer the 20s swing, thank you.
