Tarnation originally comprised just Frazer on vocals and guitar, but she was joined in 1993 by Brandan Kearny on lap steel guitar and Brent Johnson on guitar and vocals.
Musicians Michelle Cernuto, Lincoln Allen and Matt Sullivan soon joined the band. With this line-up, Tarnation released the album I’ll Give You Something To Cry About on Nuf Sed Records in 1993.
Cernuto, Allen and Sullivan left the band in May 1995, after recording the album Gentle Creatures. It was released on 4AD later that year, featuring seven re-worked songs from I’ll Give You Something To Cry About.
Frazer quickly reformed Tarnation, with a line-up including Alex Oropeza on guitar, Bill Cuevas on bass and lap steel guitar and Joe Byrnes on drums.
Jamie Meagan joined on bass in 1997, in time to take part in the recording sessions for the band's final album, Mirador.
After the break-up of Tarnation, Oropeza and Byrnes continue to play in their own band, Broken Horse, while Frazer continues as a solo artist.
Your Thoughts And Mine
Tarnation Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When we look far below the path is sharp and narrow.
Your thoughts and mine, are far away from this moment, from this moment.
Are the stars very bright in the place where you are sleeping?
Can you hear this song and this song that I am keeping?
Your thoughts and mine, are far away from this moment, from this moment.
And this story it goes as we move along the shadows.
And this story it goes along the sharp and narrow.
The lyrics of Tarnation's song "Your Thoughts And Mine" convey a sense of distance and disconnection between two people, whose thoughts and realities are far apart. The opening lines evoke a sense of uncertainty and limitation, as the moon is the only point of reference and the path ahead is sharp and narrow. The sense of physical distance is then mirrored by the emotional distance between the two characters, whose thoughts and concerns are far away from the present moment they share.
The chorus, repeated three times throughout the song, emphasizes the theme of separation and highlights the gap between the characters' perceptions of reality. The question about the brightness of the stars and the possibility of hearing the same song underline the impossibility of true connection and communication, even in the realm of imagination and dreams. The closing lines, "And this story it goes", suggest a continuous movement and progression, but also an ongoing separation and uncertainty.
Overall, "Your Thoughts And Mine" is a melancholic exploration of the human experience of distance, both physical and emotional. Through minimalistic and introspective lyrics, the song conveys a sense of longing and isolation, but also a nuanced understanding of the complexities of interpersonal relationships.
