Riley is the son of veteran singer Jimmy Riley and nurse Lavern Tatham-Riley. He was born in the Bronx and grew up in South Florida. He began his musical career as a deejay working with Busta Rhymes, taking his birth sign as his stage name at his mother's suggestion (the spelling later changed from Taurus to Tarrus), and recorded his first singles for his father's Love & Promotion label. He was guided in his early career by Dean Fraser, who also performs in his band and produces much of Riley's work.
Riley has released three albums, Challenges (2004), Parables (2006), and Contagious (2009). Contagious features guest appearances from Damian Marley, Vybz Kartel, Etana, Konshens, Demarco and Duane Stephenson. His commercial breakthrough came in 2006 with the Parables album and the Jamaican number one single "She's Royal".
Riley was awarded the Reggae Runnins Caribbean Heritage Award at the 2009 HOT 105 FM Caribbean-American Heritage Awards. He was nominated in the Best Reggae category of the 2009 MOBO Awards.
Sorry Is a Sorry Word
Tarrus Riley Lyrics

'Cause you continue to do the same thing
Now sorry is a sorry word
Look at all I've done for you
Come with your sweet talk
Call me your sweetheart
And everyday you break another piece of my heart
I'm sorry that you're sorry but sorry's not good enough for me baby
I'm sorry that you're sorry but sorry can't dry my tears lady
Each time we fight, you come with your same story
Now you sorry but I'm sorry 'cause I can't accept your apology
You say it, you say it
But you nuh mean it
You say it, you say it
But mi nuh believe it
You say it, you say it
But you nuh mean it
You say it, you say it
But mi nuh believe it
What you want me fi do
Yo, we too repetitive
Me verses you, everything competitive
A nuh so me want fi live, no a nuh my proragative
You say you want mi treat you right, girl look at what you did
Care bout mi feelings no
You nuh have no time fi me
Loving weh you say you have
You nuh have it devine fi me
One bag a things mi hear tru the grape vine you si
When mi confront you a one bag a lie you si
You say it, you say it
But you nuh mean it
You say it, you say it
But mi nuh believe it
You say it, you say it
But you nuh mean it
You say it, a pure talking
I'm sorry that you're sorry but sorry's not good enough for me baby
I'm sorry that you're sorry but sorry can't dry my tears lady
Each time we try, you come with your lame story
You're sorry but I'm sorry 'cause I don't want your apology
Everyday excitment a pure drama
People have wi business pon di corna
Ok anytime dem call my name
But as dem call your name you quick fi call dem informa
What kind a life dis? Yo, mi can't bother
What happen to the niceness? You nuh see how mi get magga?
All you bring a crisis, crosses because of
Staying is like awaiting disaster
You say it, you say it
But you nuh mean it
You say it, you say it
But mi nuh believe it
You say it, you say it
A pure talking
You say it
And I'm sorry that you're sorry but sorry but sorry won't do for me baby
I'm sorry that you're sorry but sorry can't heal my wounds baby
Each time we try, you come with your same story
Now you're sorry but I'm sorry 'cause I don't want your apology
Your words have no meaning
'Cause you continue to do the same thing
Words have no meaning
You say it, you say it
But you nuh mean it
You say it, you say it
But mi nuh believe it
You say it, you say it
A pure talking
A blah blah blah! I'm walking!
In Tarrus Riley's song "Sorry is a Sorry Word," the singer is addressing a lover who keeps repeating the same negative behavior despite repeatedly offering empty apologies. The song is structured as a conversation between the two, with the singer rejecting the apologies and using the repetition of "you say it but you don't mean it" to drive home the point that actions speak louder than words. Riley also references the emotional toll the situation has taken on him, expressing frustration that he cannot accept the apologies and highlighting the wounds left by his partner's behavior.
One interpretation of the song is that Riley is addressing the cycle of abuse within a relationship, where apologies become empty promises and the abuser keeps repeating the same hurtful behaviors. The repetition in the lyrics mirrors the repetition of the abuse cycle itself, with the apology being the "honeymoon" phase before the abuse begins again. The singer's insistence that "sorry won't do for me baby" reflects the reality that changing behavior and seeking help is necessary to break the cycle of abuse.
Another interpretation is that Riley is speaking more broadly to the idea of words losing their meaning when they aren't backed up by actions. By highlighting the contrast between his partner's sweet words and harmful actions, Riley is suggesting that hollow apologies can't make up for the damage caused.
Overall, "Sorry is a Sorry Word" is a powerful reminder of the importance of backing up words with actions and the emotional toll of empty apologies.
