Our Song
Taylor Swift / Def Leppard Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was riding shotgun with my hair undone in the front seat of his car
He's got a one-hand feel on the steering wheel
The other on my heart
I look around, turn the radio down
He says, "Baby, is something wrong?"
I say, "Nothin', I was just thinkin' how we don't have a song"
And he said,
Our song is a slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone, and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh, on the first date
Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have
And when I got home, before I said amen
Asking God if he could play it again

I was walking up the front porch steps after everything that day
Had gone all wrong and been trampled on
And lost and thrown away
Got to the hallway, well on my way to my lovin' bed
I almost didn't notice all the roses
And the note that said,

Our song is a slamming screen door
Sneakin' out late, tapping on your window
When we're on the phone, and you talk real slow
'Cause it's late and your mama don't know
Our song is the way you laugh, on the first date
Man, I didn't kiss her, and I should have
And when I got home, before I said amen
Asking God if he could play it again

I've heard every album, listened to the radio
Waited for something to come along
That was as good as our song

'Cause our song is a slamming screen door
Sneaking out late, tapping on his window
When we're on the phone, and he talks real slow
'Cause it's late, and his mama don't know
Our song is the way he laughs, on the first date
Man, I didn't kiss him, and I should have
And when I got home, before I said amen
Asking God if he could play it again
Play it again, oh yeah, oh, oh, yeah

I was riding shotgun with my hair undone
In the front seat of his car

I grabbed a pen and an old napkin
And I wrote down our song

Overall Meaning

Taylor Swift’s “Our Song” tells a story of a young couple and how they create their own memories and special moments by way of their own song. The song starts with a romantic moment, a simple conversation in a car. Taylor is riding shotgun with her hair undone, while her boyfriend drives with one hand on her heart and one on the steering wheel. Taylor turns down the radio and confesses that they don’t have a song, to which he replies by telling her that their song is the way they laugh on their first date, the way they sneak out late and tap on each other’s windows, and the way they talk on the phone, in whispers and giggles, when it’s late and their moms don’t know.

In the second verse, Taylor comes home defeated and heartbroken from an awful day, and finds a trail of roses leading to a note, reminding her that even in tough times, their song is what gets her through. The song finishes with Taylor singing about how she’s looked for a song on the radio and in albums, but nothing could compare to their personal tune.

You could have a change of heart
If you would only change your mind
Instead of slamming down the phone, babe
For the hundreth time
I got your number on my wall
But I ain't gonna make that call
When divided we stand,baby
United we fall
Def Leppard:
Got the time, got the chance, gonna make it
Got my hands on your heart, gonna take it
All I know, I can't fight this flame

But you could have a change of heart
If you would only change your mind
Taylor Swift:
Cause I'm crazy 'bout you baby
Time after time

Def Leppard:
Without you, one night alone
Taylor Swift:
Is like a year without you, baby
Do you have a heart of stone?
Def Leppard:
Without you, I can't stop this hurt inside
When love and hate collide

Taylor Swift:
I don't wanna fight no more
I don't know what we're fighting for
When we treat eachother, baby
Like an act of war
And I can tell a million lies
But it would come as no surprise
When the truth is like a stranger
Hits you right between the eyes
Ohh

Def Leppard:
There's a time, and a place, and a reason
And I know i got a love to believe in
All i know, got to win this time

Without you, one night alone
Taylor Swift:
Is like a year without you baby
Do you have a heart of stone?
Def Leppard:
Without you, I can't stop the hurt inside
When love and hate collide
