The band was founded after both Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi put their solo bands on hiatus to form a new group that lets the married couple focus on making music together, and allows them to spend more time together while touring and recording. Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi have toured together in 2007, under the name Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi's Soul Stew Revival, however this group's material was largely culled from Derek & Susan's solo projects, while the Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band mostly focuses on performing original songs.
After the announcement in late 2009 of a hiatus for both The Derek Trucks Band and Susan Tedeschi Band , the couple began writing new material, working out of their home studio in Jacksonville with a rotating cast of friends and musicians. Their first concert was on April 1, 2010 at the Savannah Music Festival, and although their touring schedule was limited in 2010, the group did perform at Eric Clapton's Crossroads Guitar Festival, Fuji Rock Festival, and several other festivals and venues.
The collaboration between Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi has also extended to other artists. Trucks and Tedeschi appeared together on Herbie Hancock's album, The Imagine Project, performing the track "Space Captain" with additional members of Derek Trucks & Susan Tedeschi Band, including Oteil Burbridge, Kofi Burbridge, and Mike Mattison. A music video was also released, showing Herbie Hancock as he recorded the song at Trucks & Tedeschi's home studio. Trucks and Tedeschi also appeared with Herbie Hancock to perform "Space Captain" at his 70th birthday concerts at Carnegie Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
On 7 March 2011, the band announced that it was changing its name to the Tedeschi Trucks Band. The first Tedeschi Trucks Band CD, Revelator, will be released on June 7th 2011.

The blues beget the blues
Open up your eyes
And do what you wanna do well
I'll wait 'til morning comes before I'll go
So do what you want to do
The way that your mama taught you
I want to hear you sing
I got your rhythm alright
Open up my heart
And do what you want to do well
But I won't ever believe
That your love is all you can give me
Our worlds are one in the same
So let's make it all right
So do what you want to do
The way that your mama taught you
Do what you need, baby
I want to hear you say
Nothing can hold me down
I'm taking the long way 'round
Oh, can't get enough, I want more
When I come around this time
There's nowhere to run and hide
Oh, I want more, more of you
All of you
Did ya, did ya give enough?
Did we, did we live enough?
Did we, did we share enough?
Did we, did we care enough?
Don't you hold it inside
I wanna hear you
Nothing can hold me down (hold me)
I'm taking the long way 'round (the long way)
Can't get enough, I want more
When I come around this time
There's nowhere to run and hide (this time)
Oh, I want more, more of you
All of you
I want to hear you sing, baby
The lyrics of Tedeschi Trucks Band's song "I Want More" discuss a desire for liberation from the melancholic state of loneliness and self-doubt. The opening lines, "Caught up in loneliness, The blues beget the blues," convey a sense of being stuck in a cycle of sadness. However, the lyrics encourage the listener to break free and do what they want, with lines like "Open up your eyes, And do what you wanna do well." The singer recognizes the potential for joy and fulfillment, urging the listener to follow their instincts.
The chorus "So do what you want to do, The way that your mama taught you," emphasizes the importance of being true to oneself and staying connected to one's roots. The repeated refrain "I want more, more of you, all of you," indicates a desire for deeper connection and engagement with the world. The lyrics end with a plea for honest communication and emotional expression, with the line "I wanna hear you sing, baby."
The song's message is universal, expressing a longing for more meaning, love, and joy in life. The melody is upbeat and celebratory, adding to the theme of liberation and self-expression. The track showcases the band's signature blues-rock sound, punctuated by Susan Tedeschi's powerful vocals.
