My grandpa grew up very poor during the Great Depression and was an alcoholic by the time he was 13. He ended up going to Alcoholics Anonymous in his mid 20's and got better (never drank again), but his drinking screwed up his life, and the lives of his family members, in the meantime. When things like this happen, I think blaming the parent is too simplistic. People often don’t understand what it takes to be a good parent, and even if you are a good parent, things can still go wrong. Buuuuuuut, this mom seems like she’s only mildly concerned about this. She doesn’t seem like she’s exhausted from trying everything and failing. There’s no real sense of panic when she can’t find her son. I had a drinking problem at the age of 11. Real problem when parents don’t discipline or lock their alcohol away from minors. Better yet I had a cabinet unlocked and never had to go out to get it. My parents thought they were smart by locking it when I then took the door hinges off so that I could get drunk. Need really good security nowadays parents.

I was drinking 2 strong beers every day at 15, at home and no one knew. Really bloody regret that, luckily now I'm abstinenant but it took years.
Really hope this boy learns quicker than me.

This clip makes me physically angry at the mother. It's pretty obvious what's going on - there's no father figure around, she lives on a council estate and takes zero responsibility for any problems that her son has... You don't have to be a genius to realize that this woman is very emotionally distant with her own child. She probably has no problem caring for him physically but has no idea how to connect with him emotionally (likely because she had him out of wedlock and wasn't ready to have a kid yet - hence the lack of Dad in the picture).

So how do you make yourself feel safe and happy when you're a 13 year old and you don't have any parents around to do it for you? You take whatever substances you can get your hands on because it's a tiny little bit of relief in your otherwise crappy life.

And the fact that "Real Stories" has the gall to classify him as a 'spoilt kid'? Disgusting. This kid isn't spoilt - he lives on a council estate. He's wearing an old school uniform. He rides around on a pushbike that he had to repair himself. He's about as low on the socio-economic ladder as is humanly possible for a kid in the First World to be, for Christ's sake. Do the producers care about any of this? No, they just want to make a TV show where people can be outraged because the social norm of children not drinking alcohol has been violated, so they can clutch their pearls for a few minutes and then forget about it and go back to sinking booze all evening long.

So, she says she cannot control what her son does behind her back, out in her community, and she’s not responsible for his behavior, as the family doesn’t drink - but then she’s handing out cigarettes to other people’s children 😓🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️ Also, I do think she’s full of excuses for her responsibility: her child is 13. He’s been drinking for 3yrs and he’s already on vodka. She knows what he’s buying when she gives him money and she doesn’t look for him before he does it and make him stay home or else send him to boarding school (which would be the best thing she could do). ive drank alcohol since i was 12 and I was a complete alcoholic up until 5 years ago (im 36)Alcohol not only destroyed my life but it also took my dads life. I feel sorry for this child because hes getting into a terrible pattern of abuse early. When you are a child you should focus on School and sports not booze. From a man full of regrets I pray he stops drinking.

Congratulations on your sobriety! If you don't mind me asking, what finally made you get sober? Most of my family have drug/alcohol addictions. I decided at a very early age that I wasn't going to let that happen to me and I was going to break the cycle with my family. My oldest is 22. So far, so good. My sister, however, has lost everything to addiction. Even her son. She got him taken away this summer and he came to stay with us until his father was granted full custody. I just don't see her ever getting clean. If losing her son didn't stop her, what will? That's why I was wondering what your turning point was.

thanks guys...What made me get sober was I hit complete rock bottom. My alcohol abuse led me to a bottle of booze and a tent...homless. I was so broken that I just decided I wanted to change my life. I also have a son so that morivated me. I went to rehab for 2.5 years. It was intense. I had to fight the anxiety that my addiction wanted to relieve with booze. For the first 6 months it was so hard for me to stay in the treatment place I was. Its just an individual decision that can come at any time. Dont give up even if it seems all hope is lost...keep loving and wishing for the best with your family. The desire to change can come randomly and dont enable them. Just let the addiction take its toll and keep loving and encouraging change. My dad couldnt stop and wasnt even willing. He died while drunk. His body gave and organs failed. What this mom in the video is allowing will have consequences that she'll regret.Terrible parenting.

My brother use to sneak alcohol when he was a child. Really important to keep alcohol out of kids hands. I personally would hide alcohol after seeing what happened lol

I started drinking at 14, my dad found out one time and picked me up from my friends house absolutely fuming. I always thought he was ruining my fun. Now I realise he was trying to stop me turning out like this kid, it worked. I hate alcohol with a passion now it’s vile. It tastes vile and it makes people act like morons

He’s a minor. The parent needs to keep him indoors until this stops or call the police if he leaves. And charge the parent with child abuse for letting her 13 year old son get blasted. She’s not a parent. That child belongs in custody of the state or in an agency.

My husband started drinking at a seriously young age ( think he said he was between 7 and 9.

Unfortunately half a bottle of vodka on a Friday is actually pretty common in the UK, even at 12/13 and it’s not limited to working class kids in socially deprived settings. Kids at private schools seemed to be doing similar things in the local parks etc.
