Based in Seattle, Lerner handled most of the instrumental duties on his band's debut, Telekinesis!, which was produced by Death Cab for Cutie's Chris Walla and released in spring 2009. Telekinesis then launched a tour in support of the record, with auxiliary members Chris Staples, David Broecker, and Jonie Broecker filling out the lineup. On the 2010 EP Parallel Seismic Conspiracies, Lerner took over production duties, but for his next full LP, 12 Desperate Straight Lines, he was back to working with Walla. For the tour that accompanied the release, Lerner formed a new band with Jason Narducy on bass and Cody Votolato on guitar. Lerner's third outing under the Telekinesis moniker, 2013's Dormarion, found the one-man band enlisting the help of Spoon drummer/producer Jim Eno.
Lerner spent the next two years immersing himself in the world of vintage synths and keyboards in anticipation of the band's retro synth pop-heavy fourth studio album, Ad Infinitum, which dropped in September 2015. Lerner struck a balance between the clean electronic textures of Ad Infinitum and the more organic approach of his earlier work on the album Effluxion, released in February 2019.

You know that anyway
Sunlight is revealing
The sun is just a fake
There's no fear of silence
We've got Mr. Bell to thank
I forget the feeling
I forget to look away
I don't wanna wake up for night
Won't wake up for night
I don't wanna wake up for night
Won't wake up for night
The future is a gift
If you take away what is left
I don't care what you wear
I don't care, but it is
I don't wanna wake up for night
Won't wake up for night
I don't wanna wake up for night
Won't wake up for night
I don't feel so small
I can see the sunrise on my wall
Holding the key to the broken bones
I can see the sunrise on my wall
I don't feel so small
I can see the sunrise on my wall
Holding the key to the broken bones
I can see the sunrise on my wall
The lyrics to Telekinesis's song Sleep In convey the singer's desire to stay in a dreamlike state and not face the reality of the world outside. The lyrics seem to address some of the more confusing aspects of life, such as the meaning of silence, the passage of time, and the nature of the future. The opening lines of the song, "Don't forget that it's a feeling, you know that anyway," suggest that there is something elusive about feeling or sensation that is hard to grasp, but that is nonetheless important to remember.
The line "Sunlight is revealing, the sun is just a fake" underscores the idea that things are not always as they seem, and that what we take for granted as real is often just a construct of our own making. The singer seems to embrace the falseness of reality, finding solace in the idea that he does not have to confront the truth of the world around him. The chorus repeats the phrase "I don't wanna wake up for night, won't wake up for night," emphasizing the singer's desire to remain in a dreamlike state, free from worry or anxiety.
The second verse of the song shifts the focus to the future, which the singer describes as a gift. He acknowledges that there may not be much left in the world, but seems to be at peace with that fact. The repeated phrase "I don't care what you wear, I don't care, but it is" suggests that the singer is detached from the material world and its appearances, and is more concerned with the deeper meaning of things. The final lines of the song describe the singer's sense of empowerment, as he holds the key to his own broken bones and is able to see the sunrise on his wall.
