The idea for the project began one day a couple of years ago when Alaina made fun of Patrick for playing tennis in college. A year later the two fled their hometown Denver to spend eight months sailing and exploring the North Atlantic coast. During their adventures they began writing music together documenting their experiences. The Longboat Pass Songfacts reports that the pair eventually recorded their songs. The resulting album, Cape Dory, is about their time on the seas, the majority of the tracks being about the difficulties they experienced during their trip.
There other artists with the same name:
2. Australian Indie band containing two brothers, two cousins and a mystery bass player. Tennis have left the halcyon days of art school behind in pursuit of the perfect musical storm. Tennis played their first gig at a strip club in Surry Hills circa ’06, simultaneously debuting in Sydney’s indie and adult entertainment scenes.
Pursuing the former rather than the latter, Tennis have since graced the stages of many more credible venues, supporting the likes of; Matt & Kim(USA), The Ruby Suns(NZ), Wolf and Cub, Children Collide, Lost Valentinos, Tame Impala and The Holidays. Their colliding beats, wild rhythms, melodic vocals and stark atmospheres meld into a festive music de force driving listeners into a sweaty rapture.
3. IDM project of Ben Edwards & Douglas Benford. Their releases:
Wooden Sweets (CD, 2000)
Duckshelf / Interview (7", Expanding 2001)
Europe On Horseback (CD, BiP_HOp 2001)
Furlines (2xCD, BiP_HOp 2003)
4. A now-defunct alternative pop/punk band from New York consisting of singer/guitarist Greg Tuohey, bassist Kris Bauman, and drummer Jochen Rueckert.
Ladies Don't Play Guitar
Tennis Lyrics

Ladies don't get down down to the sound of it
Maybe we can play pretend
Baby I can go down deep just to be what you're needing
Ladies just need your love
Don't you know we are all caught up in it
Baby, I've been listening
What you're feeling
Maybe then I can try and give my love again
We pretend I can be the one that you've been dreaming
Tell me what can I give
If all my work is oblique and abstracted
Try to build a legacy
That will not complicate the future of your own progeny
Maybe then I can try and give my love again
We pretend I can be the one that you've been dreaming
You will but I won't
You will but I won't
You will but I won't
You will but I won't
Maybe then I can try and give my love again
We pretend I can be the one that you've been dreaming
(Oh, down down to the sound of it)
In the end I decide how much my love can bend
(Oh, down down to the sound of it)
We pretend I can be the one that you've been dreaming
In Tennis's song "Ladies Don't Play Guitar," the lyrics seem to allude to societal expectations and gender roles. The opening lines, "Ladies don't play guitar, ladies don't get down down to the sound of it," suggest a constraint placed upon women, implying that certain activities or behaviors are deemed inappropriate or unconventional for them. This could be interpreted as a commentary on the limitations and stereotypes imposed on women in both personal and professional realms.
The lines "Maybe we can play pretend, baby I can go down deep just to be what you're needing" offer a sense of compromise and willingness to adapt for the sake of a relationship. It speaks to the idea of putting aside societal expectations and embracing vulnerability in order to fulfill the needs of a partner, highlighting the complexities of romantic dynamics.
As the lyrics progress, the theme of yearning for love and validation becomes more prominent. The lines "Ladies just need your love, don't you know we are all caught up in it" convey a sense of longing and dependency, while also hinting at the power dynamics at play within relationships. The desire to be understood and accepted for who one is, rather than conforming to external ideals, is a recurring motif throughout the song.
The repeated refrain "Maybe then I can try and give my love again, we pretend I can be the one that you've been dreaming" underscores the theme of striving for connection and understanding despite obstacles and societal pressures. It reflects a sense of hope and resilience in the face of adversity, as well as a willingness to break free from limiting constructs in order to pursue authentic and fulfilling relationships. Ultimately, the lyrics convey a sense of self-discovery and empowerment, urging listeners to challenge preconceived notions and embrace their true selves.
