The idea for the project began one day a couple of years ago when Alaina made fun of Patrick for playing tennis in college. A year later the two fled their hometown Denver to spend eight months sailing and exploring the North Atlantic coast. During their adventures they began writing music together documenting their experiences. The Longboat Pass Songfacts reports that the pair eventually recorded their songs. The resulting album, Cape Dory, is about their time on the seas, the majority of the tracks being about the difficulties they experienced during their trip.

Never to Part
Tennis Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Milk white skin moved in from night
Unblemished are your private parts
Desire can't oppress your light
Queue 'round movements that you make
Will not make men hesitate
Lest your chimes are all revealed
Then your barrow you may wheel
Do not furrow that perfect brow
Chased lips never to part 'til now
Do not furrow that perfect brow
Chased lips never to part 'til now
Child, all of this I've done for you
Child, we were only been thinking of you
Little virgin, sweetly made
Knows not of the plans we've laid
Got the fragile flickering light
To extinguish as we write
Free from every wicked thing
You receive a diamond ring
Prepubescent wedding day
There upon you lay your head
Do not furrow that perfect brow
Chased lips never to part 'til now
Do not furrow that perfect brow
Chased lips never to part 'til now
The lyrics of Tennis's song Never to Part seem to delve into the disturbing topic of child sexual abuse, presenting it in a hauntingly beautiful and poetic way. The song may, therefore, be interpreted as a commentary on the way society views and treats young girls concerning their sexualities. The first verse of the song introduces a young, innocent girl who is pure and untouched, representing the childlike naivety that often accompanies youth. The lyrics "Unblemished are your private parts, Desire can't oppress your light," suggest that the child is unaware of any sexual desires, and those around her should not impress such desires on her.
The second verse of the song seems to be from the perspective of someone who wishes to take advantage of this innocent child. The lyrics "Queue 'round movements that you make, Will not make men hesitate," suggest that they are waiting for the perfect time to strike, and the chimes are all revealed. Furthermore, the lyrics, "Child, all of this I've done for you, Child, we were only thinking of you," highlights how the abuser could justify their actions to themselves, saying they did it for the child's sake.
The last verse suggests the inevitable outcome of these events, with the lyrics, "Prepubescent wedding day, There upon you lay your head." This line refers to the child's forced marriage and the sexual abuse that will surely occur as a result. The repeated chorus asks the girl to remain quiet and not show her emotions, with the lines "Do not furrow that perfect brow, Chased lips never to part 'til now," emphasizing the importance of secrecy and silence surrounding the sexual abuse.
