The idea for the project began one day a couple of years ago when Alaina made fun of Patrick for playing tennis in college. A year later the two fled their hometown Denver to spend eight months sailing and exploring the North Atlantic coast. During their adventures they began writing music together documenting their experiences. The Longboat Pass Songfacts reports that the pair eventually recorded their songs. The resulting album, Cape Dory, is about their time on the seas, the majority of the tracks being about the difficulties they experienced during their trip.

Pillow for a Cloud

Over seven paths at once
If only I could think and feel along
Over seven paths at once
I'd never let you down
If only you and I could linger on
We are high up in your arms
Got a pillow for a cloud
Living on sighs taking our time
Before it takes us over
If only you and I began again
'Stead of reliving old sins
I'd never let you down
If only you and I could ask the dust
What it's ever done for us
I'd never let you down
Time passing used to thrill me
Now it only terrorizes me
And its evidence carved into my skin
And over everything I ever loved
Time passing used to thrill me
Now it only terrorizes me
And its evidence carved into my skin
And over everything I ever loved
Never coming down
Got a pillow for a cloud
Never coming down
Got a pillow for a cloud
Never coming down
Got a pillow for a cloud
Never coming down
Got a pillow for a cloud
Never coming down
The lyrics of "Pillow for a Cloud" by Tennis express themes of longing, the passage of time, and the desire for redemption. The song opens with the reflection of wanting to possess the ability to think and feel along multiple paths simultaneously. This longing is associated with the idea of never wanting to disappoint someone, indicated by the line "I'd never let you down." It suggests a desire for emotional depth and understanding beyond the limitations of the self.
The next verse introduces the notion of lingering and being embraced in someone's arms. This image is described as having "a pillow for a cloud," which implies a sense of comfort and escapism from reality. The characters in the song are depicted as living in a state of slow pace and indulging in sighs, perhaps trying to savor moments before they are overwhelmed by something bigger.
The following verse suggests the desire for a fresh start or a break from repeating past mistakes. The longing to escape the cycle of reliving old sins is expressed with the promise of not letting someone down once again. There is a sense of yearning to question the purpose or impact of certain actions by asking what the dust has ever done for them.
The chorus delves into the changing perception of time. Initially, time used to bring excitement and enjoyment, but now it is seen as something that only terrifies. The evidence of time's passage is described as being carved into the singer's skin. This could symbolize scars or marks left by the experiences and hardships endured over time. The mention of it being "over everything I ever loved" suggests the impact that the passage of time has on relationships and cherished things.
The song concludes with the repetition of the phrase "Never coming down, got a pillow for a cloud," emphasizing the desire to remain in a state of comfort and escape from the harsh realities of life. This repetitive phrase implies the hope for a perpetual state of bliss and tranquility, avoiding any potential disappointment or pain that may come with coming back down to reality.
Overall, "Pillow for a Cloud" explores themes of longing for emotional connection, the passage of time, and the desire to break free from past mistakes. It touches on the complexities of relationships and the varying perceptions of time's impact on our lives.
