The idea for the project began one day a couple of years ago when Alaina made fun of Patrick for playing tennis in college. A year later the two fled their hometown Denver to spend eight months sailing and exploring the North Atlantic coast. During their adventures they began writing music together documenting their experiences. The Longboat Pass Songfacts reports that the pair eventually recorded their songs. The resulting album, Cape Dory, is about their time on the seas, the majority of the tracks being about the difficulties they experienced during their trip.

Wounded Heart
Tennis Lyrics

Here tell your anguish
Youth has no sorrow
But your love can remove
A watcher is at the gate
An eager listener
Woods long forgotten
Steadfastly keeping
You were so resolute
When my ideas are rushing pas mal
And your look does not bear a reproof
Your look does not bear a reproof
Here bring your wounded heart
Here tell your anguish
Come my disconsolate
And be renewed
Steadfastly keeping
You were so resolute
When my ideas are rushing pas mal
And your look does not bear a reproof
Your look does not bear a reproof
Your look does not bear a reproof
The lyrics of Tennis's song "Wounded Heart" are a call for vulnerability and an invitation for healing. The first two lines, "Here bring your wounded heart / Here tell your anguish," set the tone for the rest of the song. The singer is urging someone to open up and share their pain. They acknowledge that, in youth, there may be little sorrow but that love has the power to heal the wounds of the heart.
The third and fourth lines introduce the idea of a watcher at the gate and an eager listener. It's unclear who this could be, but it's possible that it's a reference to the person being addressed in the song. The fifth and sixth lines, "Woods long forgotten / That may be exhumed," create a sense of mystery and suggest that there may be buried feelings or memories that need to be unearthed in order to heal.
The next two stanzas repeat the idea of steadfastness and resoluteness from someone who has been supportive in the past, even when the singer's ideas were not well-formed. The chorus then repeats the opening lines, underscoring the importance of sharing pain in order to find renewal. The repeated line "Your look does not bear a reproof" emphasizes that the person being addressed is a safe space for the singer to be vulnerable.
