Born in Dallas, Texas, Campbell was introduced to the R&B by Quincy Jones in August 1989. Campbell's debut single was "Tomorrow (A Better You Better Me)" which reached number 1 on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip hop Singles chart in June 1990. It was the lead single from Quincy Jones' critically acclaimed ensemble LP Back on the Block which won the Grammy Award for Album of the Year in 1991. After working with Jones and writers and producers including Siedah Garrett, Campbell worked with producers Narada Michael Walden, Al B. Sure, Babyface, and others to record additional music.
Campbell's first solo hit was "Round and Round", which charted at #3 on R&B charts in November 1991 and #13 on the Billboard Hot 100 in April 1991 was produced by Prince and was featured in Prince's film Graffiti Bridge. Campbell followed the success of his first two singles by releasing his debut album, T.E.V.I.N., in November 1991 which featured the R&B hit singles and Campbell's only #1 Adult Contemporary hit: "Tell Me What You Want Me To Do" followed by:, "Alone With You", and "Goodbye". His second album, I'm Ready released October 1993, yielded the #1 R&B hit and #9 pop single "Can We Talk" in December 1993, "I'm Ready", "Always in My Heart" which charted at #3 on the R&B chart. He also scored a Top 30 hit with "Don't Say Goodbye Girl" on the R&B charts. In September 1994, Campbell also scored an R&B hit with the single "U Will Know" as part of the R&B supergroup Black Men United, a group that also included singer Usher.
The year 1996 saw the release of his third album, Back to the World (#11 R&B). The title track was a success (hitting the R&B Top 20), but additional singles failed to make an impact on the chart. His early 1999 self-titled album was found Campbell venturing into the neo-soul venue. The project was rushed, and as a result charted below the R&B Top 30, with only one single charting, a Top 30 song called "Another Way".
Campbell was nominated for five Grammy Awards and two American Music Awards.
In December 2005, Campbell made his Broadway debut in the role of Seaweed J. Stubbs in the hit musical Hairspray. Campbell is currently still playing in Hairspray.
Campbell returned to the studios in 2006, working with producers Scott Storch, The Underdogs, Krucial Keys, Bryan Michael Cox, Rodney "Darkchild" Jerkins, and Ryan Leslie. The comeback album is waiting to be published and will be released in 2008.

Tevin Campbell Lyrics

Leave your name and a brief message
And I'll be sure to get back with you, peace
"Tevin, I love you"
Shhh, break it down
I don't want nobody else to hear the sounds
This love is a private affair
Shhh, we got to break it on down
In the day time, uh, uh, I think not
I'd rather do you after school
Like some homework, am I gettin' you hot?
In my bedroom? No, 'cause then we have to stop
Please don't stop
I'd rather wait 'til everyone's fast asleep then do
It in the kitchen on the table top, oh
We got to break it on down, oh baby
Shhh, break it down
I don't want nobody else to hear the sounds
This love is a private affair
Interrupt the flow, no they better not dare
Shhh, we got to break it on down
Can you hear me?
We got to break it on down
Candlelight? No, I don't think so
The crackle of the flame will just spoil the flow
Besides, I can be your fire, baby
Drippin' all over like a ball of wax, relax and let go
Shhh, ooh, break it down
I don't want nobody else to hear the sounds
This love is a private affair
Interrupt the flow, no they better not dare
Shhh, we got to break it on down
Oh, goin' down
We got to break it on down
Break it down, baby
I'm here to do work, baby, so what you here to do?
I know you got somethin' special on your mind, is that true? Yeah
I'm here to do work, baby and I wanna do it with you
You say you wanna slow jam? Then listen up girl
I wanna whisper music in your ear
That'll rock your, rock your, rock your world, oh
What's my name, love? Tevin
I'll ask you again and again and again and again
'Til you scream, scream it, scream it, oh yeah
Break it on down, what's my name, baby?
Hear the sound, this is a secret, private affair
Nobody will know, better not dare
Oh yeah, you got to break it on down, down and down, oh
You got to break it on down
If you with this then let me hear you say, oh
Shhh, break it down
I don't want nobody else to hear the sounds
This love is a private affair
Interrupt the flow, no they better not dare
We got to break it on down, oh oh
We got to break it on down
I'm ready, are you?
The lyrics of Tevin Campbell's song "Shhh" is a sultry ode to a private and secret love affair. From the opening voicemail message, the tone is set as a young woman confesses her love for him. The song continues with Tevin's smooth vocals expressing his desire to keep their love a "private affair" and break it down only in secrecy. The lyrics suggest that the lovers should keep their relationship hidden from the world, particularly during the daytime. Tevin suggests that they should wait until nighttime when no one is around to interrupt their flow. The two must keep quiet during their intimate moments, ensuring no one else hears their "sounds." Tevin repeatedly asks the woman if she's ready to break it on down with him and share this private affair.

The song is not only about keeping their relationship silent but also the importance of the moment shared between them. The lyrics suggest that the couple needs to appreciate each other's company and take their time to enjoy the sensual moment in a private and safe space.
