The sound is post-rock, electronic and musical.
A classically trained violinist and pianist, she is instinctively electronic, experimental, and a drummer - this combination forms the explosive backbone of her tracks. Her tracks currently tend more towards traditional song structures, within which melodic elements are combined with a core of electronic rhythms.
She records and mixes in a small 200 year-old stone cottage in Oxford, where she also studies Latin, Greek and Persian.

The-Waves Lyrics

nothing can be done now
hold out
we're all on common ground
even if there's no one at home
even if there's no where to go
even if you're always alone
slow down
all things will pass somehow
but hold out
this doesn't mean right now
tragically
we come and go
like the sea's
ebb and flow
blue and red and green
sunsets blur
but eventually
colors return
In "Return", The-Waves comfort listeners with words of reassurance and hope during uncertain times. The lyrics encourage slowing down and taking solace in the fact that everyone is sharing the same experience, even if it feels isolating. The repetition of the phrase "hold out" emphasizes the idea of perseverance and encourages listeners to keep going. The lyrics acknowledge the transient and unpredictable nature of life, symbolized by the sea's ebb and flow, but also suggest that eventually, things will return to their natural state. The image of blurred sunsets signifies the passing of time, but also hints at the possibility of new beginnings and fresh starts.
The message of "Return" is accentuated by the song's dreamy, ethereal sound, which features layered vocals and atmospheric instrumentation. The Waves have described their music as "ocean pop," and this track embodies that genre with its sweeping, immersive soundscapes. Fans have noted the song's ability to capture a sense of nostalgia and longing, while also providing a sense of comfort and hope.

I really like the comparison between photographers being able to stop a moment in time and life stopping around you when something bad happens, stopping you from doing what you love too. And then having the courage on your own to start moving again. Such beautiful and subtle storytelling :)

At first I thought this was about that feeling when you travel and realize the places you go do not need you to exist, you have no past and no future there, as if time itself yeeted you out.
But it was more about how to give your passion your own legs, instead of relying on other people to push it forward.
Beautiful animation, colouring and soundwork with an important message, absolutely amazing work!

Interesting what you say about travel. I was taken to quite a few different countries as a child and always felt that I didnt belong there and so felt uncomfortable and wanted to come home; unable to enjoy the experience as others seemed to. As a result I haven’t travelled abroad as an adult. You articulate why I think I would feel that way now very succinctly.
