Control
TheBirthdayMassacre Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Their on the side of caution
They're taking in the new girls
Two faced, too poised to shed a tear
No memory to speak of
Past in the night we didn't hear
The fading breath of your love

We lose control of the moments
Another trend goes out of season
A new love, forever
Look the other way
You see through me
A new trend, indifference

You are a child of privilege
Your reputation leads you
All trace of light will disappear
You're falling into season
Their every word is insincere
There is no time for reason

We lose control of the moments
Another trend goes out of season
A new love, forever
Look the other way
You see through me
A new trend, indifference

Remember our childhood
It's not quite the same
A pale hue of new blood
They all know your name

We lose control of the moments
Another trend goes out of season
A new love, forever
Look the other way

You see through me
A new trend, indifference

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of TheBirthdayMassacre's song "Control" are a critique of the society that we live in, where we often fall victims to trends and social pressures. The song describes the way people in power manipulate the masses and control them through fear, insincerity and indifference. The opening lines, "They're on the side of caution, they're taking in the new girls," suggest that those in power are wary of newcomers and always looking to control them, while the lines "Two faced, too poised to shed a tear, no memory to speak of, past in the night we didn't hear, the fading breath of your love" describe how they operate - cold and calculated, with no compassion or empathy.

The chorus, "We lose control of the moments, another trend goes out of season, a new love, forever, look the other way, you see through me, a new trend, indifference," talks about how we succumb to these trends and how love is just one more trend that comes and goes. The lines "You are a child of privilege, your reputation leads you, all trace of light will disappear, you're falling into season, their every word is insincere, there is no time for reason" describe how those in power manipulate young people, and how they will disappear once they are of no use to them. The bridge, "Remember our childhood, it's not quite the same, a pale hue of new blood, they all know your name," is a nostalgic reminder of a time when we were innocent and free, contrasting sharply with the cynicism and indifference of the present.

This, to me, sounds like young 'love' where youths so unconcerned with other things 'fall in love forever' with one person, and then soon after, much like a trend that goes out of season, they fall out of love and into love with another.
