Buffalo
The 303s Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
It's gonna take a war between us
Arrows will pierce our skins and we bleed
The stars rip right through the constellation
Country's infectious greed
Archaeologists find the buffalo
The seed, the seed
It's not what I would like to see
It's not what I would like to see, yeah
These wars have many fights
The Indians are coming back
The Indians are coming back
The Indians are coming
The Indians are coming
Claim their territory
See their buffalo die
Claim their territory
You're beautiful tonight
You're beautiful
tonight
The lyrics to The 303s’s song Buffalo deal with the themes of war, greed, and the effects of colonialism on Indigenous peoples. The chorus stating “It's gonna take a war between us, Arrows will pierce our skins and we bleed, The stars rip right through the constellation,” speaks to the idea that Indigenous peoples and those who colonized their lands have a deeply rooted conflict that will take something as violent as a war to resolve. The use of arrows speaks to the weaponry used by Indigenous people historically and highlights the historical context for the conflict. The mention of the stars ripping through the constellation adds a layer of desperation to the lyrics, as if the stars and the universe itself are bearing witness to the violence and destruction of colonialism.
The second verse mentions ‘Country’s infectious greed’ which ties the conflict to broader themes of colonization and capitalist interests. The mention of the buffalo is a reference to the historical buffalo hunts and their importance to Indigenous cultures. The buffalo was hunted almost to extinction and remained scarce for many years due to human greed and exploitation. The reference to archaeologists finding the buffalo is perhaps a nod to the attempts at reclaiming lost Indigenous history in a colonial world. The line ‘The seed, the seed’ possibly ties back to the idea of colonization and the idea that the colonizers ‘planted the seed’ of colonialism which had disastrous effects on the native populations.
