Keep Going
The Abyss Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Ready to get outta this mess
It's on repeat it just happened again
Couple of weeks almost starving to death
Let's end this fight yeah I don't want no bad

Can we just cut ties I don't want you
Can't stand all these lies coming from you
Then I gave you another chance again

Baby we can't keep going on and on

And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
Baby we can't keep going on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
Baby we can't keep going on and on

Red lights put a stop to democracy
I'm lost by all the things you said to me
In the end you never really knew me no

Wanna talk are you up for conversation?
You're busy you couldn't really make it
I knew that you were lying all along

And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
Baby we can't keep going on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on
And on and on

And on and on
Baby we can't keep going on and on

Overall Meaning

The Abyss's song "Keep Going" is a powerful and poignant expression of the pain and frustration that can come from a toxic and unsustainable relationship. The lyrics are filled with a sense of desperation and the need for change, as the singer pleads with their partner to let go of their destructive patterns and move on from the pain that they are causing.

The first verse hints at the toll that the relationship has taken on the singer, with lines like "Couple of weeks almost starving to death" suggesting that their partner's behavior has left them physically and emotionally drained. The chorus emphasizes the need for change, with the lines "Baby we can't keep going on and on" repeated over and over again, driving home the urgency of the situation.

The second verse delves deeper into the conflict, with the singer referencing "red lights" that have "put a stop to democracy" and expressing their feeling of being "lost by all the things you said to me." The frustration and pain are palpable, as the singer pleads with their partner to be honest and open with them.

I remember getting this on DVD. Wife came in the man cave and I was bawling during this scene. Hit the rewind button and she was bawling as well. Very powerful scene. Mary was just on point and you felt 💯% pain from her performance!

Allison Mackay

She acted the shit out of this film despite what I will charitably call "challenging shooting conditions". They all did.

This has to be one of the most touching things I have seen in any movie . I do love the way it was written into the movie

I absolutely LOVE the background music that plays when Bud tells Lindsey "love you wife." It's not loud or bombastic, nor is it overly sentimental. It's melancholic because of the idea that he would die down there alone, but with a touch of heartwarming, because those words of love would eventually save the world from total destruction.

Jon Adrian

This movie came out in 1989. I think. IT GAVE US THE WARNING and the ANSWER TO HOW WE SURVIVE WHEN THE WORLD DOESNT LISTEN TO GODS WARNING. ONLY WAY THROUGH IS LOVE ❤️.

This sentence, and the way it is delivered and written - the entire scene even - is why, today, I love calling my wife "Wife",

Lindsay pleading with him to come back up gets me everytime. And that one simple line: "Love you Wife"

(spoiler) and that it was the reason why mankind was spared

@jordan stricker Yep, exactly, they realized not all humans were bad, some were capable of real love and selfless acts.

@jordan stricker I have a suggestion, others have no obligation to consider (as if you needed my approval for any action- how silly is that?). The term “mankind” has led me to rethink Neil Armstrong’s verbal message from the moon. “One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” If we at least in this discussion, forgive Neil for using only the root syllable of human, which is spelled M A N, as a sort of group identifier for beings including multiple genders, instead of listing them out to the best of his abilities, then let’s move on to a discussion of “mankind”. There could be multiple messages of hope and peace in that word. My younger self always assumed it was an awareness of the insignificance of his step, as one guy occupying a space suit, to those of the millions of guys, gals, etc. whose efforts made it possible. Also, served as a message of hope for peace between nations. Now I think there is more of a message here than we may have understood. “Mankind”. Again, assuming no slight on females for this discussion. What if it was an acknowledgement of the existence of other self aware life forms, including both extraterrestrial ones and possibly moon based ones who we had come to visit. Mankind. Being we intended to be “kind” to in hopes for peace? Beings we wanted to promote the message that we saw them to be the same “kind” of beings as us, regardless of physical appearance or lack there of? An open invite to join us as one considered “mankind”. First topic of discussion, what should we name this club, we suspect “mankind” might not please that many, please forgive our use of a coded message.
