The Accidentals Lyrics

I'm pushing down pedals to make my way home
Down in the valley, they're kicking up salt
Licking the wounds of a war over mounds of asphalt
Both sides pitching lies to their kin, sheltering words with their spin
If you think that it's broken now, well it's just breaking in
It goes to waste, it goes to waste
I wrote a letter, it got lost in the noise
But I'll make a new path in the aftermath of the destroyed
It's getting cloudy, but now I love the rain
If everyone's linked, then nobody's weak on this chain
Both sides pitching lies to their kin, sheltering words with their spin
If you think that it's broken now, well it's just breaking in
It goes to waste, it goes to waste
It goes to waste, it goes to waste
It goes two ways, it goes two ways
It goes two ways, it goes two ways
Going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone
Going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone
Going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone
Going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone, going, going, going, gone
It goes to waste, it goes to waste
It goes to waste, it goes to waste
It goes two ways, it goes two ways
It goes two ways, it goes to waste
In "Waste" by The Accidentals, the lyrics tackle themes of environmental destruction, political deception, individual resilience, and the interconnectedness of humanity. The opening lines, "The dirt in the landfill, it's pushing up daisies, I'm pushing down pedals to make my way home," juxtapose the degradation of the Earth with the perseverance of the singer. The landfill symbolizes the reckless disposal of waste and its harmful consequences on the environment. However, the singer chooses to focus on their personal journey, using cycling as a metaphor for moving forward amidst the destruction.
The lyrics also touch on the idea of societal conflict and manipulation. The line "Down in the valley, they're kicking up salt, licking the wounds of a war over mounds of asphalt" illustrates a battle over resources and power. Both sides are portrayed as deceptive, pitching lies to their own people and spinning words to protect their interests. This represents the corrupt nature of politics and the manipulation of information to control the narrative.
Despite the brokenness of the current state of affairs, the chorus suggests that this is just the beginning of the damage. "If you think that it's broken now, well it's just breaking in" implies that the situation is only getting worse and that the consequences of our actions will continue to accumulate over time. The repetition of "it goes to waste" emphasizes the idea of negligence and squandering valuable resources, both in terms of the environment and in human interactions.
In the second verse, the singer expresses frustration at their efforts to communicate, as their letter gets lost amidst the noise. However, rather than being discouraged, they choose to forge a new path in the aftermath of destruction. This showcases individual resilience and the ability to adapt and find meaning amidst chaos.
The lyrics also highlight the importance of unity and the recognition that everyone is linked together. The line "If everyone's linked, then nobody's weak on this chain" suggests that collective strength can be found in solidarity and understanding. This sentiment challenges the divisive nature of society and encourages people to recognize their interconnectedness in order to overcome adversity.
The repetition of "going, going, going, gone" in the closing section creates a sense of urgency and finality. It implies that if we continue down the path of waste and destruction, we may reach a point of no return. The final lines "It goes two ways, it goes two ways, it goes to waste" serve as a reminder that we have the power to choose between positive change and further waste, and that our decisions will ultimately determine the fate of our world.
