Changing
The Airborne Toxic Event Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All these buckets of rain, I've heard enough about.
You say that I lied.
I am a gentleman didn't I ask for a place I could stay?
What were we both thinking?
The next part just got in the way.
You were just always talking about changing, changing
What if I was the same then, same then,
The same I always was?

All these things that you say,
Like I'll forget about the mind-numbing games that you play.
I am a gentleman, didn't I pay for every laugh, every dime,
Every bit every time and then you feed me some line.
I won't hear one more word about changing, changing
Guess what I am the same man,
Same man, same man I've always been.

Days pass and turn into weeks, when we don't even speak.
We just lay wide awake and pretend we're asleep.
You go home alone and you're checking your phone
And you're looking at me like I'm something you own.

All these buckets of rain,
You can't forget about it,
You say I never tried.
I am a gentleman,
Didn't I answer every time that you call,
Pick you up when you fall
But you never listen at all
You were just always talking about changing, changing
Guess what I am the same man, same man.
Changing, changing
Guess what I am the same man, same man.

Changing, changing
Guess what I am the same man, same man.

Overall Meaning

The Airborne Toxic Event's song "Changing" explores the idea of a relationship that has reached its breaking point. The lyrics are filled with self-reflection, accusations, and frustration. The song begins with the singer expressing exhaustion with his partner's constant complaints about the past. He suggests that he's heard enough about the mistakes he's made and takes issue with his partner's accusation that he's lied. The singer, despite it all, maintains his sense of dignity by declaring himself a gentleman and reminding his partner that he asked for a place to stay. The line "What were we both thinking? The next part just got in the way" suggests that the relationship perhaps began with good intentions, but that inevitably things didn't go as planned.

In the chorus, the singer takes issue with his partner's desire for change, questioning if perhaps he's always been the same person and it's their perception of him that's changed. He takes the position that he's always been "the same I always was" and resists the idea that he needs to change to suit his partner's needs. The second verse continues this theme, accusing his partner of playing "mind-numbing games" while he's shown her nothing but kindness and support. He reiterates his status as a gentleman, reminding her that he's paid for everything and been there every time she's needed him, but she never listens to what he has to say. In the bridge, the singer describes the distance that's grown between them, painting a picture of two people lying next to each other pretending to sleep. The song ends with a final repetition of the chorus, emphasizing the singer's resistance to change and his assertion that he's always been the same person.

Damn dude 10 years later and this is still so damn good. An old friend showed me this band in high school

@artnwityr

speaking of "old," here are some random thoughts: I didn't know that the lead singer wrote a top selling book, graduated from Stanford on a track scholarship, and today is 49 years old (old by alternative band standards)!
