Can you hear me smiling when I sing this song
For you and only you
As I leave will you be someone to say good-bye
As I leave will you be someone to wipe your eye
My foot is out the door
And you can't stop me now
You wanted the best, it wasn't me
Will you give it back
Now I'll take the lead
When there's no more room to make it grow
I'll see you again, you'll pretend you're naive
Is this what you want
Is this what you need
How you end up let me know
As I go, remember all the simple things you know
My mind is just a crutch and I still hope
That you will miss me when I'm gone
This is the last song
The hearts start breaking as the year is gone
The dream's beginning and the time rolls on
It seems so surreal, now I sing it
Somehow I knew that it would be this way
Somehow I knew that it would slowly fade
Now I am gone, just try and stop me now
You wanted the best, it wasn't me
Will you give it back
Now I'll take the lead
When there's no more room to make it grow
I'll see you again, you'll pretend you're naive
Is this what you want
Is this what you need
How you end up let me know
As I go, remember all the simple things you know
My mind is just a crutch and I still hope
That you will miss me when I'm gone
This is the last song
Will you need me now, you'll find a way somehow
You want it too, I want it too
As I go, remember all the simple things you know
My mind is just a crutch and I still hope
That you will miss me when I'm gone
Last song
As I go, remember all the simple things you know
My mind is just a crutch and I still hope

This is the last song
The All-American Rejects's song, "The Last Song," is a track about moving on from a relationship that has reached the end of its course. The singer asks whether his partner would be there to say goodbye and wipe her eyes as he leaves. He is determined to move on and take the lead in his life and music career. The lyrics express his desire to be missed and his hope that he will not be forgotten. The line "My mind is just a crutch, and I still hope" suggests that the singer relies on his thoughts to help him cope with the situation.
The chorus repeats the phrase "You wanted the best, it wasn't me" several times, indicating that the girl he's leaving had other expectations. He questions whether this is what she truly wants and what she needs. The bridge describes the bittersweet feeling of moving on with life and the heartbreak that follows. The final lines express the singer's hope that his partner will remember the simple things about him and miss him after he's gone.

Life is a bittersweet memory once it’s been lived and lost. I regret this comment already.
@laughingxmermaid
That's not what the song is about? It's about moving on and not wallowing in despair after being hurt. It's the "last song" he is writing for the person who broke his heart.
