Mean Woman Blues
The Allman Brothers Band Lyrics

Well I love you baby, but you won't give me the time of day.
Well I love you baby, but you won't give me the time of day.
Treat me so bad, but I love you anyway.
Early in the morning sun begins to rise,
Early in the morning sun begins to rise,
Call out your name, wring my hands and cry
Got me runnin', don't know what to do,
There won't be much of me when you get through.
Down on the bottom, nothing left to lose,
Lord I got 'em, mean woman blues.
Well, I love you baby, but you don't even know my name.
Well, I love you baby, but you don't even know my name.
Don't care about me but love you just the same.
Now, someday baby, take you by the hand,
Yeah, someday baby, take you by the hand,
You be my lovin' child and I'll be your lovin' man.
Yeah, you got me runnin', don't know what to do,
There won't be much of me when you get through.
Down on the bottom, nothing left to lose,
Lord I got 'em, mean woman blues.
Got me runnin', don't know what to do,
There won't be much of me when you get through.

Down on the bottom, nothing left to lose,
Lord I got 'em, mean woman blues.

Overall Meaning

The Allman Brothers Band's bluesy song, "Mean Woman Blues," depicts a man's love for a woman who doesn't reciprocate his affection. Despite her mistreatment of him, he claims to love her regardless. The opening lyrics, "Well, I love you baby, but you won't give me the time of day... treat me so bad, but I love you anyway" set the tone of unrequited love and desperation. The man is devoted to this woman, but her lack of interest in him causes him pain and distress, as seen in the chorus when he cries out her name and wrings his hands.

The verses describe the man's inner turmoil and the trouble he's facing because of this woman's hold on him. He's "got me runnin', don't know what to do," and he's on the verge of losing himself completley because of her. However, despite her indifference to him, he'll still "love you just the same." In the final verses, he professes that he'll take her by the hand and be her "lovin' man" if she'll only give him a chance.

Overall, "Mean Woman Blues" is a melancholic and desperate plea for a love that might never be returned. It represents the heartache and pain that many people experience when they love someone who doesn't feel the same.
