Oxygen
The Aluminum Group Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I've seen more drugs and alcohol than a chemistry set,

While you were weaned on popsicles and eucharist,

And there's a spacecraft full of dog orbiting both of us

And the oxygen has left its ship, long ago.
My mind is spinning, that we both still stand a chance

If we just don't think of the dog or the oxygen.

And the birds sing hallelujah in the yard,

And the Serb has left his car keys on the bar,

And if the girls ask how I'm doing,

One more time,

I'll get another round for me,

And I'll be fine.

All my tricks I picked up off an old rockette,

While you were bedding military brats like a consulate.

There's a spacecraft full of dog haunting both of us,

And the oxygen forgot its ship long ago.

In my mind there's a good chance

That we both will have our day

If we just don't think of the dog

Or the oxygen.

And the mourning birds are past their mourning song,

And the Serb is stretched and passed out on the lawn,

And if the girls ask how I'm doing,

One more time,

I'll get another round for me,

And I promise you I'll get some air,

And I'll be fine.

You abandoned the carnival for the military base,

And i'm still taking pointers off every medical case.

So this spacecraft full of dog is over us

And if we just don't look at the moon.

Overall Meaning

The Aluminum Group's song Oxygen speaks of the singers' addiction problems and their different upbringing. The lyrics start with the singer stating that they have seen more drugs and alcohol than a chemistry set, while the other person was raised on popsicles and eucharist. The metaphorical spacecraft full of dog orbiting them symbolizes their addiction, looming and threatening their relationship. The oxygen has left the ship, which means they're gasping for air as they struggle with their problems.

Despite their problems, the singer believes they still stand a chance if they don't think of the dog or the oxygen, that is, if they don't let their addiction consume their relationship. The birds singing hallelujah and the Serb leaving his car keys on the bar gives some moments of respite, but they're short-lived as the birds move on and the Serb passes out drunk on the lawn.

The singer reflects on their past and how they learned their survival tricks from an old rockette, while the other person was involved with military brats, hinting at their different lifestyles. However, the singer believes that they both have a good chance of making it if they don't let their addiction take over, and if they don't look at the moon, which could symbolize their aspirations, a distant and unattainable goal.
