Crest
The Antlers Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Wait in the dark for me.
Wait ’til you hear my feet.
Through & through, they wanna walk all over you.
Run where they can’t follow.

Wait underwater with me.
Swim ’til you’re half-asleep.
Through & through, they wanna sink and maroon you.
Float on your back,
Take me closer to truth, but much, much further.

Through & through, I’m the ocean under you.
Float on your back,
Take me closer to truth, but much, much further.

Closer to truth,
But much, much further…

Overall Meaning

Interpretation:

The song Crest by The Antlers is a melancholic ballad about longing and yearning for someone. The opening verse - “Wait in the dark for me. Wait ‘til you hear my feet,” - sets the tone for the entire song. The singer is asking the person they love to wait for them in the dark until they arrive. The following lines, “Through & through, they wanna walk all over you. Run where they can't follow,” seem to suggest that the singer wants to protect the person they love from harm. The line “run where they can’t follow” is particularly poignant, indicating that there may be external forces that are trying to harm the person they love, but the singer wants to keep them safe.

The second verse - “Wait underwater with me. Swim ‘til you're half-asleep,” - continues the water theme introduced in the first verse. It’s not clear whether the singer is asking the person they love to literally wait with them underwater, or if it’s a metaphor for something else. The line, “Through & through, they wanna sink and maroon you,” seems to suggest that there is some kind of danger that the person they love is facing. However, the final lines of the song - “Take me closer to truth, but much, much further. Closer to truth, but much, much further…” - leave the meaning of the song open to interpretation. It could be that the singer is asking to be taken closer to the truth about their relationship, or about the danger the person they love is facing. Or it could be that they are asking to be taken further away from reality, in a dreamlike escape from the pain of the situation.
