Hope
The Artificial Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

You know they say the day the music died was in feburary of '59,
But that mortal wound took much more time to drain the veins of music dry.
So now we're here to mourn and bury the corpse that's just a coil that i used to love,
Dollar signs and demographics nail the coffin shut.

Don't give yourself away.

Cried until my eyes went blind the day i found out that kurt died.
I was seventeen and i got drunk on wine for the first time.
Nine years later lost elliott,
And people said they saw it coming like you could have expected that shit,
But seriously, who expected THAT?

Hold on to hope and don't let it go,
Better days are coming but they're moving so slow it's hard to see.
And it wont take long for us to bleed to death, once our heart's broken beyond belief.

No, no, the music never died,
It's clearly fighting for it's life...

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of The Artificial Heart's song "Hope" talk about the death of music industry as we know it, and the mourning of different artists who have passed away. The song begins with reference to the "The Day the Music Died" which is widely known as the day in 1959 when a plane crash killed rock and roll musicians Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and the Big Bopper. However, the song suggests that the death of music happened over time, with dollar signs and demographics being the cause of music's downfall. The line "Don't give yourself away" is a reminder to artists and music lovers not to lose their creative integrity in the face of commercial interests. The lyrics then shift to a personal reminiscing of when the artist found out about the deaths of Kurt Cobain and Elliott Smith, two influential musicians of the 90s alternative rock scene. The lyrics suggest that while people may have said they saw Elliott Smith's death coming, no one could have predicted it. The song ends on a positive note, urging listeners to not lose hope, even as the music industry seems to be fighting for its life.

Overall, the song "Hope" is a reflection of the current state of the music industry and the challenges artists face in maintaining their creative freedom in a commercial environment. It pays tribute to artists who have died before their time and serves as a reminder to listeners to hold onto hope and not let their hearts break beyond belief.
