Letting Go
The August Empire Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Do you like what you see
A lot of memories staring back at me
Pretend it′s nothin
Time is wasting away
But hearts get broken each and every day
I'm not good at letting go
I found some pictures and the alcohol
It don′t really help me thru the storm
Its clear I'm fallin to pieces
Knowing that somebody else is lovin you
And I just called to let you know
I'm not good at letting go
You in a hurry?
Or got somethin to say
Like do you think about me anyway
Me I′m stuck in a hotel
On the lincoln county line
Hearts get broken yea but I′ll be fine
I just called to let you know
I'm not good at letting go
I found some pictures and the alcohol
It don′t really help me thru the storm
Its clear I'm fallin to pieces
Knowing that somebody else is lovin you
And I just called to let you know
I′m not good at letting go
I'm not good at letting go
I′m not good at letting go
I'm not good at letting go
The lyrics of The August Empire's song Letting Go depict a sense of nostalgia and heartbreak. The opening line of the song, "Look in the mirror, do you like what you see?" suggests introspection and self-reflection. The next line, "A lot of memories staring back at me," hints at the past that the character is clinging onto. The character pretends that it's nothing, but in reality, time is slipping away, and hearts continue to break every day.
The character admits to struggling with letting go, as evidenced by the repeated line, "I'm not good at letting go." They have found solace in alcohol and pictures, but these things do not help them to weather the storm of heartbreak. They know that somebody else is loving their former partner, and this realization has caused them to fall apart. They are stuck in a hotel on the Lincoln county line, and although they acknowledge that hearts get broken, they will be fine eventually.
Overall, the song evokes a sense of melancholy and heartache. Through their lyrics, The August Empire reveals the many ways in which heartbreak can affect a person, from their mental state to their physical surroundings. The song's straightforward chorus drives home the point that it's not easy to let go of someone you love truly.
