The Divine Chord
The Avalanches Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I still remember you
The way I dreamed of you
The way I hoped that you imagined I'd be
Long before we came to realize the hard truth
Things aren't always what you want them to be

It's not a secret now
We couldn't work it out
We didn't want to know how hard it could be
So I'll keep clinging to the real you I knew
Before you ever met me

(And now the stars are rearranging, I know)
I still remember
(And now the stars are interchanging, I know)
I still remember you
(And now the stars are rearranging, I know)
I still remember you
(And now the stars are interchanging, I know)

I'll take a chance this time
And reset all the lies
Keep the fire burning long as can be
Maybe I'll become the person you wished I was
Before you ever met me

(And now the stars are rearranging, I know)
(And now the stars are interchanging, I know)
I still remember you
(And now the stars are rearranging, I know)

I still remember you
(And now the stars are interchanging, I know)

Overall Meaning

The Avalanches's song The Divine Chord is a love song that explores the pain of loss and the memories of a past relationship. The opening lines set the tone for the rest of the song, as the singer remembers their former love before acknowledging that things didn't turn out the way they hoped. The phrase "Long before we came to realize the hard truth" suggests a sense of inevitability and resignation, as the singer recognizes the limitations of their relationship. Despite the disappointment, the singer still remembers their former love and seems to hold onto the hope that they can reconnect in some way.

The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "And now the stars are rearranging, I know", which could be interpreted as a metaphor for the idea that life is constantly changing and shifting. The singer is acknowledging that they are no longer with their former love, but they still hold onto the memories and the possibility of reconnecting. The final verse offers a glimmer of hope as the singer vows to "reset all the lies" and become the person their former love wanted them to be, perhaps in the hopes of winning them back.

Overall, The Divine Chord is a poignant love song that captures the pain and uncertainty of lost love, while also hinting at the possibility of reconciliation and growth.

@ThumpingThromnambular

The subject matter of the lyrics is so grounded.
They illustrate the recognition of the person you were FOR someone else.

"and now the stars are rearranging"

The conept of 'star crossed lovers' is now changing, what is seen as a done deal by the heavens is now gone.

Aside from that they dip so well into the beauty that great music shoudl always attempt to.
I feel energy in the part of my heart that one would wish would always feel warm true attention.

Graceful is how I would describe the most prominent qualities of some of The Avalanches greatest works.
