Is That You Mo-Dean?
The B-52's Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Waitin' for bus number nintey-nine
Goin' to the store for hot dogs and wine
When all of a sudden, I felt real cold
And wound up in the belly of a big ol' UFO

On the bus, to the plane
To the UFO and to outer space, baby
On the bus, to the plane, baby yeah
Take me away

Is that you Mo-Dean? (it's me, Mo-Dean)
Is that you Mo-Dean? (on a UFO)
Is that you Mo-Dean? (it's me, Mo-Dean)
The interdimensional outer space being

Movin' through the spheres, faster than light
On our way to some planets that were outta sight
We said space driver, give it a spin
And take us to some places we ain't never been

On the bus, to another plane
To the UFO and to outer space, baby
On the bus, to the plane, baby yeah
Take me away

Is that you Mo-Dean? (it's me, Mo-Dean)
Is that you Mo-Dean? (on a UFO)
Is that you Mo-Dean? (it's me, Mo-Dean)
The interdimensional outer space being

Is that you Mo-Dean?
It's me, Mo-Dean!
Is that you Mo-Dean?
It's me, Mo-Dean!
Is that you Mo-Dean?
It's me, Mo-Dean!
I say, at which depot do we depart from his UFO?

Well, it had been nine hundred and eighty-seven years in outer space time when I got back
Couldn't seem to find any of my friends to tell my intersting stories to (past life)

On the bus, to the plane
To the UFO and outer space baby
On the bus, to the plane, baby yeah
Take me away

Is that you Mo-Dean? (it's me, Mo-Dean)
Is that you Mo-Dean? (on a UFO)
Is that you Mo-Dean? (it is I, Mo-Dean)
The interdimensional outer space being

Is that you Mo-Dean?
It's me, Mo-Dean!
Is that you Mo-Dean?
It's me, Mo-Dean!
Is that you Mo-Dean?
It's me, Mo-Dean!

Overall Meaning

The B-52's's song "Is That You Mo-Dean?" takes the listener on a wild journey through outer space on a UFO with Mo-Dean, an inter-dimensional outer space being. The lyrics describe how the singer was waiting for a bus to go to the store for hot dogs and wine when suddenly they felt cold and ended up in the belly of a UFO. From there, they traveled through the spheres faster than light, visiting planets that were out of sight. At some point, they ask Mo-Dean at which depot they depart from his UFO. As the song ends, the traveler comes back to their present time, unable to find any friends to tell their intersting stories about their past life to.

The song is a typical B-52's song that uses absurd and quirky lyrics with a catchy tune to create a fun and danceable experience. Despite the nonsensical lyrics, it speaks to the imagination of listeners who may dream of their own otherworldly adventures.
